Abstract

Reducing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Reproductive and Perinatal Outcomes: The Evidence from Population-Based Interventions Arden Handler, Joan Kennelly, Nadine Peacock, editors Among women's health concerns, reproductive issues, both prenatal and postpartum, hold particular prominence. Yet despite the many programs dedicated to improving women's reproductive health, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates in minority communities remain unchanged or have increased. Confronting this alarming statistic head-on, Reducing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Reproductive and Perinatal Outcomes is the first book systematically examining public health interventions designed toward meeting this important and elusive goal. Its contributors offer the best thinking and practice on this complicated topic, clarifying the relationship between evidence-based medicine and evidence-based public health and its potential for increasing parity, considering interventions in the multiple contexts of women's lives, reviewing the evidence base for each program or initiative featured, and describing methodologies for evaluating interventions. The resulting volume advocates for an integrative lifespan approach, including topics related to: Family planning STI and HIV/AIDS screening and treatment Smoking cessation and reducing exposure to environmental smoke Preconceptional well-woman care Depression screening and treatment Labor/delivery approaches and intrapartum care Emerging prenatal care interventions, from centering pregnancy to doula support For professionals and graduate students in psychiatry, psychology, sociology, women's health, and public health, Reducing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Reproductive and Perinatal Outcomes reframes a set of ongoing issues and guides the reader toward state-of-the-art solutions.

Abstract

Frozen sections are performed while a patient is undergoing surgery as a basis for making an immediate diagnosis that will impact treatment decisions. Frozen section diagnosis is often a highly demanding situation for the pathologist who must render a diagnosis quickly, based on careful gross examination of specimens to select optimal areas for microscopic examination. The Frozen Section Library series will provide concise, user-friendly, site specific handbooks that are well illustrated and highlight the pitfalls, artifacts and differential diagnosis issues that arise in the hurried frozen section scenario. Donna M. Coffey, M.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas and Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, New York. Ibrahim Ramzy, M.D., is Professor of Pathology - Laboratory Medicine & Obstetrics-Gynecology, University of California, Irvine, California and Adjunct Professor of Pathology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

Abstract

Overactive Bladder in Clinical Practice provides a timely and comprehensive update on the overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome. The symptoms of urgency, with or without urge incontinence, usually with frequency or nocturia, now defined as the overactive bladder syndrome, have become a hot topic in urology, gynecology and urogynecology. Epidemiological data show very high disease prevalence (19%), particularly when compared with other chronic conditions such as diabetes (2%) and asthma (7%). OAB symptoms impact severely on patient's quality of life, causing significant impairment of patient vitality and limiting their physical role, similar to diabetes. The OAB syndrome involves all age groups, both sexes and is frequently found in neurogenic patients. This book will cover all aspects of OAB epidemiology, economics, pathophysiology, conservative, pharmaceutical and surgical and is invaluable reading for residents and trainees in urology, gynecology and urogynecology.

Abstract

Approximately 21,000 family physicians in the United States regularly perform obstetrics as part of their primary care responsibilities. In Obstetrics in Family Medicine: A Practical Guide, a seasoned inner-city family physician concisely surveys the normal obstetrics encountered in a busy medical practice to provide a practical guide to the evaluation and management of common prenatal, peripartum, and postpartum complications. For each stage, Dr. Paul Lyons addresses the major issues and problems, spelling out in detail management protocols about why and what action is to be taken, when it is to be done, and how it is to be interpreted. The key points for each topic are summarized in tabular form for quick reference, and diagnostic flow charts illuminate all aspects of the decision-making process. Expert advice based on years of experience is also presented concerning physical and ultrasound examinations, laboratory tests, drug toxicities, and screening techniques. For the clinician seeking a point-of-care tool to look up information quickly when attending to patients in the office, a PDA version of the book is available from the Humana website: www.humanapress.com. Concise and clinically oriented, Obstetrics in Family Medicine: A Practical Guide aims to improve the delivery of women's health care, helping both family doctors who are doing obstetrics and those who want to better understand what is happening to their pregnant patients reach a higher standard of care.

Abstract

The impetus for this book came from the recent appearance of single specialty books pertaining to reoperative surgery on various organs in the pelvis, as well as from the recognition that several different disciplines are involved with the challenges of reoperative pelvic surgery. Surgeons often encounter challenging dilemmas involving organ systems that have historically been attended to by surgeonsrepresentingcloselyrelatedbut distinctspecialtyareas. Withincreasing sophisticationand knowledge about management of anatomically adjacent organs by the specialties of gynecologic oncology, gynecology, urology, and colon and rectal surgery, as well as the emergence of specialty training programs in urogynecology and pelvic floor disorders, we thought it appropriate and timely to create a textbook acknowledging this increasing knowledge and interspecialty collaboration. To this end, where appropriate, we haveincluded collaborative authors fromeach of the specialties, any ofwhommaybecalledupontoaddressaparticularanatomicarea. Itseemsinevitablethatsituations willariseinwhichthecollaborativeexpertiseofseveralseparatespecialtiesmayconvergetoprovide surgeons the benefit of the combined thought processes that would prove invaluable when such difficult problems are encountered. With this in mind, the editors, from the fields of gynecologic oncology, urology, and colon and rectal surgery, identified experts in theirown fields who could bestcontribute to the management of specific problem areas. For example, since reoperations for endometriosis may involve uterus, adnexae, ovaries, or the colorectum, the chapter concerning this condition has been coauthored by specialists in colorectal surgery and gynecologic oncology. We have been fortunate to find experts who have collaborated to bring available evidence-based medicine, best demonstrated practices, and personal experience to their contributions.

Abstract

The investigation and management of male infertility can be a formidable diagnostic challenge to family physicians, urologists, and reproductive specialists alike. In Office Andrology, noted clinical physicians and scientists have joined forces to create a comprehensive resource guide to current diagnostic and treatment options for a broad spectrum of clinical issues relevant to male infertility disorders. Topics covered range from basic sperm biology and male reproductive endocrinology, to immunology, specialized sperm testing, and the genetic background to male infertility. Although emphasis is on the investigation, diagnostic testing, and management of the infertile male, controversial medical and surgical treatment options are also fully discussed. For the reproductive specialist, the text thoughtfully reviews such timely issues as gender selection, human immunodeficiency virus-discordance couples, and posthumous reproduction. Other topics of interest include laboratory accreditation, vasectomy reversal, ethical and legal considerations of donor insemination, optimizing success in a donor insemination program, and strategic therapies for ejaculatory disorders and erectile dysfunction in infertile men. Authoritative and highly practical, Office Andrology offers both general practitioners and specialists a concise yet comprehensive desktop reference for answering the complex questions surrounding the evaluation and treatment of male reproductive disorders.

Abstract

Abstract

The treatment of gynecologic cancers at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has a long history of multidisciplinary cooperation. Gynecologic Cancer, the fifth volume in the M. D. Anderson Cancer Care Series, details M. D. Anderson's approach to the care of women with gynecologic cancers. Written for physicians, the book emphasizes the day-to-day aspects of practice, minimizing extensive literature review and approaches not yet incorporated into routine practice. In 17 comprehensive yet concise chapters, M. D. Anderson faculty describe their approaches to the treatment of endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancers, as well as preinvasive gynecologic diseases, vaginal and vulvar cancers, uterine sarcomas, and rare ovarian malignancies. In addition to the discussions of individual disease sites, the book contains chapters on prevention, pathology, imaging, fertility-sparing options, quality of life issues, including sexual functioning, and palliative care. Each chapter includes a list of suggested readings and key practice points that highlight the most important principles presented. This thorough, practical volume, which includes more than 60 photographs and line drawings, is an essential clinical guide for oncologists, surgeons, and all physicians involved in the care of patients with gynecologic cancers.
