This book critically examines the overall interplay between comparative education discourses, globalisation, and education. It draws upon recent studies in relevant areas and explores conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches. It demonstrates the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of education and policy reforms, and illustrates the way the relationship between the State and education policy affects current models and trends in education reforms and schooling globally. Various chapters critique the dominant debates and the newly constructed and re-invented models of neo-liberal ideology in education. Using a number of diverse paradigms in comparative education research, ranging from critical theory to globalisation, the authors, by focusing on globalisation, ideology and democracy, examine both the reasons and outcomes of education reforms, policy change and transformation and provide a more informed critique on the Western-driven models of accountability, quality and school effectiveness.

Europe is going through a sort of "social revolution" with the influence of the church and religious instruction in state schools being open to discussion. Critics claim that providing religious instruction in state schools violates the constitutional separation of church and state. And yet, despite an alleged separation of church and state, in most countries, the church continues to play a considerable public role, especially in education. This publication is a compilation of studies on religious instruction in state schools. It describes the diversity between states and analyzes the legislative basis of religious instruction in various countries. Whereas in some countries, religious instruction in state schools is optional or compulsory with the possibility to opt out, in other countries religious instruction is banned from state schools. The comparative analyses in this book will be of great value to researchers in educational research and to educational policymakers. The chapters are written in the English, French, German, Italian and Spanish language.

A big project like this Handbook means that you incur debts, and not only to your authors and your publisher. As editors we, along with our colleague Elaine Unterhalter who edited the section on postcolonialism, would like to thank most warmly those authors who delivered on time, and who did not fuss but just got on and did a ? r- rate job. We would also like to thank all authors who did deliver – which was almost everyone we asked. We know that some of our authors worked in very dif? cult private circumstances as they were ? nishing their chapters and we hope the publication of the Volumes will, later, be for them a happy reminder of dif? culties and disasters overcome. The only sad theme is that some very close colleagues, with whom we were wo- ing and for whom we had the greatest respect and liking, became very ill (and died) while the volumes were being prepared. We decided to ask for copyright permissions to publish something of theirs. These permissions were graciously given by two major journals and with the agreement also of our publishers Springer, Rolland Paulston and Terry McLaughlin have examples of their writing in this Handbook.

Nina Bascia, Alister Cumming, Amanda Datnow, Kenneth Leithwood and David Livingstone This Handbook presents contemporary and emergent trends in educational policy research, in over ?fty chapters written by nearly ninety leading researchers from a number of countries. It is organized into ?ve broad sections which capture many of the current dominant educational policy foci and at the same time situate current understandings historically, in terms of both how they are conceptualized and in terms of past policy practice. The chapters themselves are empirically grounded, providing illustrations of the conceptual implications c- tained within them as well as allowing for comparisons across them. The se- re?exivity within chapters with respect to jurisdictional particularities and c- trasts allows readers to consider not only a range of approaches to policy analysis but also the ways in which policies and policy ideas play out in di?erent times and places. The sections move from a focus on prevailing policy tendencies through increasingly critical and ‘‘outsider’’ perspectives on policy. They address, in turn, the contemporary strategic emphasis on large-scale reform; substantive emphases at several levels – on leadership and governance, improving teacher quality and conceptualizing learning in various domains around the notion of literacies and concluding, ?nally, with a contrasting topic, workplace learning, which has had less policy attention and thus allows readers to consider both the advantages and disadvantages of learning and teaching under the bright gaze of policy.

In our rapidly globalizing world students are able to access learning through mobility, through computer mediated experiences, and through the diverse perspectives of their peers and teachers. All of these components impact on the ways in which universities and their staff prepare and present courses for their students. This book presents an edited selection of chapters compiled under the theme of ‘new international pedagogies’. The objective is to document current pedagogical frameworks and practices in the teaching and learning context of international education. It showcases innovative teaching and learning methods, methodological frameworks and novel pedagogies that contribute to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning in international settings and diverse student groups. The collection of seventeen chapters offers new debate on applied critical educational thought, innovation in teaching and learning, and culturally sensitive and inclusive curriculum practices across a broad disciplinary spectrum. Of central interest is the production of teaching and learning examples that provide evidence for implementing progress and advancement in the field. The book aims to stimulate further debate, research and application in the field of international pedagogies.
