Dit boek, dat handelt over een uiterst actueel onderwerp, namelijk multiculturaliteit, is echter meer dan een zoveelste beschouwing of theorie hierover. Om te beginnen is het een immanente kritiek van het moderne discours. Multiculturaliteit toont duidelijk aan hoe dit discours tekortschiet wanneer het erop aankomt verschillende culturen niet alleen naast maar ook vooral met elkaar te laten leven. In tweede instantie wordt multiculturaliteit in dit werk een maatschappelijk werktuig, een methode om het klassieke moderne discours dat vooral gericht is op economie en technologie te overstijgen. Vanuit dit perspectief is het een uitdieping van democratie. Multiculturaliteit, in tegenstelling met wat sommigen willen doen geloven, is dus geen zoveelste ideologie. This book highlights the need to develop new educational perspectives in which multilingualism is valorised and strategically used in settings and contexts of instruction and learning. Situated in the current educational debate about multilingualism and ethno-linguistic minorities, chapter authors examine the polarised response to heightened linguistic diversity and how the debate is very much premised on binary views of monolingualism and multi- or bilingualism.
