Children and adolescents increasingly participate in competitive sports, resulting in a higher incidence of acute and overuse injuries. While some sports injuries mirror those in adults, others are unique owing to the inherent weakness of the growing skeleton at specific sites. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of these entities, and radiologists need to be familiar with the advantages and limitations of the various imaging modalities when evaluating the injured young athlete. This book, written by leading experts from Europe and the United States, covers a wide spectrum of sports injuries seen in children and adolescents. The first part comprises a series of introductory chapters on topics such as the clinician's viewpoint, the normal anatomy and variants, the imaging of articular cartilage, and the current role of ultrasonography in imaging injured young athletes. In subsequent chapters, each important site of injury is considered individually with the aid of informative images. The final part of the book resembles an atlas and presents the most commonly encountered injuries in the popular sports of football, skiing, water sports, tennis, and gymnastics. Throughout, particular attention is paid to the most recent advances in knowledge and imaging.

Cet ouvrage s'inscrit dans l'ambitieux projet qui consiste, dans le cadre de la collection à embrasser les connaissances actuelles en traumatologie de la main en trois volumes. Les deux premiers ouvrages sont consacrés aux procédés de recouvrement des pertes de substance cutanée, ainsi qu'à ceux de réduction et de fixation des fractures et luxations. Le présent ouvrage, s'intéresse précisément à ce qui ne se visualise qu'à l'exploration chirurgicale, dans les conditions d'asepsie et d'anesthésie du bloc opératoire. Sont abordées la réparation de l'appareil tendineux, des nerfs, des lésions multi-tissulaires, ainsi que les stratégies complexes qui doivent être mises en place en quelques minutes pour analyser les lésions, comprendre les besoins du patient, et reconstruire une main à la fois efficace et esthétique. Trauma biomechanics uses the principles of mechanics to study the response and tolerance level of biological tissues under extreme loading conditions. Through an understanding of mechanical factors that influence the function and structure of human tissues, countermeasures can be developed to alleviate or even eliminate such injuries. Trauma Biomechanics surveys a wide variety of topics in injury biomechanics including injury classification, injury mechanisms and injury criteria. Both injuries sustained in automotive accidents and in sports are addressed. The interdisciplinary approach necessary in trauma biomechanics is stressed by showing the span from anatomy for each body region to engineering solutions for protection against injury. Injury tolerance values are listed, either currently in use or proposed by both the U.S. and European countries. Although the book is meant as a first introduction for engineers and medical doctors, sufficient references for scientific research are provided also.

Sport gaat een steeds voornamere rol spelen in onze huidige samenleving. Sportgeneeskunde is als een nieuw onderwerp in de reeks Praktische huisartsgeneeskunde daarom goed op z'n plaats.
