Children and adolescents increasingly participate in competitive sports, resulting in a higher incidence of acute and overuse injuries. While some sports injuries mirror those in adults, others are unique owing to the inherent weakness of the growing skeleton at specific sites. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of these entities, and radiologists need to be familiar with the advantages and limitations of the various imaging modalities when evaluating the injured young athlete. This book, written by leading experts from Europe and the United States, covers a wide spectrum of sports injuries seen in children and adolescents. Trauma biomechanics uses the principles of mechanics to study the response and tolerance level of biological tissues under extreme loading conditions. Through an understanding of mechanical factors that influence the function and structure of human tissues, countermeasures can be developed to alleviate or even eliminate such injuries. Trauma Biomechanics surveys a wide variety of topics in injury biomechanics including injury classification, injury mechanisms and injury criteria. Brain injury remains one of the most dreaded complications of cardiac surgery. The range of injury is broad; while a stroke may be easily defined and diagnosed, more subtle injuries most definitely occur. There remains debate as to how these are diagnosed and there is a lack of standard definitions allowing inter-study comparison.
