"Dit is de catalogus van een omvangrijke tentoonstelling van moderne kunst in de Kölnermessehallen in Keulen (30.5- 16.8.1981) die werd samengesteld door Laszlo Glozer en Kasper König. De opzettelijk provocerende titel Westkunst is een woordspeling op 'Weltkunst'. Men wilde ermee verwijzen naar de hegemonische westerse ideologie en naar de bestaande politieke en ideologische opdeling van Europa in West en Oost. De curatoren vetrokken van het jaar 1939 – het begin van WOII en van een massale migratie van vooraanstaande Europese kunstenaars naar New York – en kozen 800 werken van 200 kunstenaars. Methodologisch gezien werd een beroep gedaan op de formalistische traditie in de kunstgeschiedenis, waardoor elke historische ideologische contextualisering werd vermeden. De expositie was georganiseerd volgens een formeel/iconografisch principe en het idee van artistieke innovatie. Het 'Today'-gedeelte van de tentoonstelling, dat bedoeld was als representatie van het werk van opkomende kunstenaars, werd door critici omschreven als een 'vakbeurs' of 'dealerselectie'. Westkunst wordt beschouwd als een duidelijk voorbeeld van de onwil van de trans-Atlantische kunstwereld om kunstenaars van niet-westerse afkomst te aanvaarden." - M HKA Ensembles

La question de la nature passe aujourd'hui par celle du paysage : ce dernier a pris dans le débat social et culturel une place centrale. Il convenait dès lors de la reconsidérer dans le contexte plus large où ces pratiques ont lieu, en ouvrant des perspectives éthiques sur les rapports de notre société à l'environnement. Parler du paysage c'est convoquer perceptions individuelles et représentations collectives, nature et société, regard esthétique et maîtrise du territoire, psychologie et politique. Ce livre est en même temps un essai d'esthétique, de critique et d'histoire de l'art. Il analyse les articulations entre discours et pratiques artistiques contemporaines dans la nature depuis le Land Art, entre projets et transformations paysagères, et s'interroge sur la façon dont ces différentes attitudes nous concernent et nous rendent plus conscients de notre appartenance et de notre singulière étrangeté du monde.

Dutch artist, Daan Roosegaarde, is one of the most innovative artists to emerge in the past decade. His sculptures and installations, made in collaboration with a team of engineers and designers, aim to create better conditions in cities and to make difficult areas habitable again, by rethinking processes and upgrading urban structures. At the core of Roosegaarde's practice is schoonheid, a Dutch word that stands both for 'clean-ness' and 'beauty.' It is this that has informed some of his most popular public projects, including 'Waterlicht' (a virtual flood that shows the force of water); 'Smog Free Project' (a large outdoor air purifier that turns smog into jewelry), and 'Smart Highway' (an interactive road that charges throughout the day and glows at night).
