This book deals with education systems and the change observed within them alongside changes in the wider political economy. The research is conducted by way of a comparative case study of England and Germany. Extending the VoC approach, not only vocational education and training but also school education and higher education are analysed. The point of departure is the puzzling fact that the current reforms of the education systems of both countries are departing from the paths predicted by the VoC approach. The thesis thus argues against institutional path-dependency in the two countries, and in favour of an ideational approach based on discursive institutionalism. This book is essential reading for researchers in the social sciences, comparative political sciences and educational sciences.

"Neil Andrews presents a concise account of English civil justice as the system has been reconfigured in the first years of the 21st century. His book is an original and important study of the system on which American civil litigation rests. It is a wide-ranging introduction to the three principal paths of justice in England: court proceedings, arbitration and mediation. It is the first such review of English civil justice to be published in the United States since adoption of the reforms. Written by one of England's leading experts in the field, it is a reliable guide to contemporary English civil justice for students, practitioners, professors, judges, and policy-makers in the United States and throughout the world." The book focuses on one of the most problematic areas of Turkish penal justice: the overreliance on custodial measures and a corresponding growth in the prison population, and compares Turkey with two major European countries in this respect: England and Wales and Germany. The underlying question throughout the study is the extent to which prison alternatives can be seen as genuine alternatives to immediate custodial sentences.

In 1986 Derek Jarman discovered he was HIV positive and decided to make a garden at his cottage on the barren coast of Dungeness. Facing an uncertain future, he nevertheless found solace in nature, growing all manner of plants. While some perished beneath wind and sea-spray others flourished, creating brilliant, unexpected beauty in the wilderness. Modern Nature is both a diary of the garden and a meditation by Jarman on his own life: his childhood, his time as a young gay man in the 1960s, his renowned career as an artist, writer and film-maker. It is at once a lament for a lost generation, an unabashed celebration of gay sexuality, and a devotion to all that is living.

William Bateson brought the work of Mendel (and much more) to the attention of the English-speaking world. He commanded the biological sciences in the decades after Darwin's death in 1882. To understand these years we must first understand Bateson. Through examination of the life of a major contributor to the turn-of-the-century revolution in biology, the authors of this volume reconcile the genocentrism of George Williams and Richard Dawkins with the hierarchical thinking of Richard Goldschmidt and Stephen Jay Gould. The anti-Darwinian arguments of Bateson are only now, a century later, gaining recognition. At last, Evolutionists can present a unified front to their creationist opponents.
