Abstract

As one of the most prolific mathematicians of our time, Karl Gustafson has been a central figure in the astonishing technological revolution of the last half-century a revolution which has transformed human life. This, his own account of his journey through those decades, takes the reader from his early pioneering work in computing and espionage, where his contribution was vital to the American Cold War effort, to his observations on core contemporary issues such as the stability of the world's financial system. Gustafson's crucial role in top-secret military intelligence, which saw him tracking Russian submarines, intercepting electronic intelligence and writing the software for America's first spy satellite, is related here for the first time. His narrative includes fascinating encounters with Nobel laureates and figures of historical importance, the European post-doctoral fellowships that expanded his perspectives on science and life, and hair-raising stories from his early rock-climbing days including brushes with death then and later, such as being struck by lightning and knocked unconscious near a mountain top. Gustafson's wide-ranging mathematical accomplishments have led to invitations and travel throughout the world, and he tells of the great and at times strange personalities he has met along the way. His unique journey has included hard knocks and beautiful women, who have, as he likes to say, added to the great adventure.

Abstract

The book gives a streamlined introduction to quantum mechanics while describing the basic mathematical structures underpinning this discipline. Starting with an overview of key physical experiments illustrating the origin of the physical foundations, the book proceeds with a description of the basic notions of quantum mechanics and their mathematical content. It then makes its way to topics of current interest, specifically those in which mathematics plays an important role. The more advanced topics presented include many-body systems, modern perturbation theory, path integrals, the theory of resonances, quantum statistics, mean-field theory, second quantization, the theory of radiation (non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics), and the renormalization group. With different selections of chapters, the book can serve as a text for an introductory, intermediate, or advanced course in quantum mechanics. The last four chapters could also serve as an introductory course in quantum field theory.

Abstract

The present volume contains the contributions for the 9th European Conference on Genetic Programming (EuroGP 2006). The conference took place during April 10-12, 2006 in Budapest, Hungary. EuroGP is a well-established conf- ence and the only one exclusively devoted to genetic programming worldwide. EuroGP began as a workshopin 1998 in Paris, and has been held annually since then,becomingaconferenceinEdinburghin2000.Allpreviousproceedingshave been published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. More recently, EuroGP has been co-located with EvoCOP 2006, the 6th Eu- pean Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimization, and the EvoWorkshops, focusing on applications of evolutionary computation, resulting in the largest combined event dedicated to evolutionary computation in Europe. Genetic programming (GP) is evolutionary computation that solves complex problems or tasks by evolving and adapting a population of computer programs, using Darwinian evolution and Mendelian genetics as its sources of inspiration. The 32 papers included in these proceedings address fundamental and theore- cal issues, along with a wide variety of papers dealing with di?erent application areas,suchascomputerscience,engineering,machinelearning,Kolmogorovc- plexity, biology and computational design, showing that GP is a powerful and practical problem-solving paradigm. A rigorous, double-blind, selection mechanism was applied to 59 submitted papers,thatresultedintheacceptanceof21plenarytalks(36%acceptancerate) and 11 poster presentations (54% global acceptance rate for talks and posters).

Abstract

Investing in eHealth: What it Takes to Sustain Consumer Health Informatics examines the evolution of the IHCS and the significant changes in organizational culture and operational systems that may be required for successful and sustained implementation. This book culminates a set of general guidelines for any health care provider striving to successfully employ the model, and suggests directions for future research on the diffusion of IHCSs and related technologies. Investing in eHealth provides a principled approach to support health care managers, clinicians, and educators interested in complementing clinical services with interactive health communication systems (IHCSs). David H. Gustafson, PhD, is a professor of Industrial Engineering and Preventive Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also Director of the University's Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research and Director of the National Program Office for the National Improvement Network for Addiction Treatment. Abstract

The 11th European Conference on Genetic Programming, EuroGP 2008, took place in Naples, Italy from 26 to 28 March in the University of Naples Congress Centre with spectacular views over the Gulf of Naples. This volume contains the papers for the 21 oral presentations and 10 posters that were presented during this time. A diverse array of topics were covered re?ecting the current state of research in the ?eld of Genetic Programming, including the latest work on representations, theory, operators and analysis, evolvable hardware, agents and numerous applications. A rigorous, double-blind peer review process was employed, with each s- mission reviewed by at least three members of the international Program C- mittee. In total 61 papers were submitted this year, making an acceptance rate of 34% for full papers, and an overall acceptance rate of 51% including posters. S- mission of papers and the reviewing process were greatly assisted by the use of the MyReview management software originally developed by Philippe Rigaux, Bertrand Chardon and other colleagues from the Universit´e Paris-Sud Orsay, France. We are especially grateful to Marc Schoenauer from INRIA, France for managing this system. Reviewers were asked to nominate keywords specifying their area of expertise, and these keywords were matched to those selected by the authors of the submitted papers with the assistance of the optimal assignment feature of the conference management software.
