Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in modern medicine, with a number of well-known advantages in terms of image quality, functional imaging options, and patient safety. The idea of using this enormous potential also for interventional purposes may seem obvious, but it took major efforts by engineers, physicists, and clinicians to come up with dedicated interventional techniques and scanners, and improvements are still ongoing. Since the inception of interventional MRI in the mid-1990s, the numbers of settings, techniques, and clinical applications have increased dramatically. This state of the art book covers all aspects of interventional MRI. The more technical contributions offer an overview of the fundamental ideas and concepts and present the available instrumentation. The richly illustrated clinical contributions, ranging from MRI-guided biopsies to completely MRI-controlled therapies in various body regions, provide detailed information on established and emerging applications and identify future trends and challenges.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing, RSCTC 2008, held in Akron, OH, USA, in October 2008. The 49 revised full papers presented together with 2 keynote papers and 3 special session papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on logical and mathematical foundations, data analysis, data mining, decision support systems, clustering, pattern recognition and image processing, as well as bioinformatics. The three special session papers cover topics such as rough sets in data warehousing, classification challenges in email archiving, and approximation theories: granular computing vs. rough sets.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Rough Sets and Knowledge Technology, RSKT 2008, held in Chengdu, China, in May 2008. The 91 revised full papers papers presented together with 3 keynote papers and 6 tutorial papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 184 submissions. They all focus on five major research fields: computing theory and paradigms, knowledge technology, intelligent information processing, intelligent control, and applications. The papers are organized in topical sections on rough and soft computing, rough mereology with applications, dominance-based rough set approach, fuzzy-rough hybridization, granular computing, logical and mathematical foundations, formal concept analysis, data mining, machine learning, intelligent information processing, bioinformatics and cognitive informatics, web intelligence, pattern recognition, and real-life applications of knowledge technology.

Abstract

The LNCS journal Transactions on Rough Sets is devoted to the entire spectrum of rough sets related issues, from logical and mathematical foundations, through all aspects of rough set theory and its applications, such as data mining, knowledge discovery, and intelligent information processing, to relations between rough sets and other approaches to uncertainty, vagueness, and incompleteness, such as fuzzy sets and theory of evidence. Volume XIII contains 14 papers which introduce a number of new advances in both the foundations and the applications of rough sets. These are mathematical structures of generalized rough sets in infinite universes, approximations of arbitrary binary relations, and attribute reduction in decision-theoretic rough sets. Methodological advances introduce rough set-based and hybrid methodologies for learning theory, attribution reduction, decision analysis, risk assessment, and data mining tasks such as classification and clustering. In addition, this volume contains regular articles on mining temporal software metrics data, C-GAME discretization method, perceptual tolerance intersection as an example of a near set operation and compression of spatial data with quadtree structures.

Abstract

Volume VI of theTransactions on Rough Sets (TRS) commemoratesthe life and 1 work of Zdzis law Pawlak (1926-2006) . His legacy is rich and varied. Professor Pawlak's research contributions have had far-reaching implications inasmuch as his worksarefundamental in establishing newperspectives for scienti?c research in a wide spectrum of ?elds. From a very early age, Zdzis law Pawlakdevoted his life to scienti?c research. The pioneering work by Prof. Pawlak included research on the design of c- puters, information retrieval, modeling con?ict analysis and negotiation, genetic grammars, and molecular computing. His research led to the introduction of knowledge representation systems during the early 1970s and the discovery of rough sets during the early 1980s. Added to that was Prof. Pawlak's lifelong interest in painting, photography, and poetry. During his lifetime, he nurtured worldwide interest in approximation, approximate reasoning, and rough set the- 2 ory and its applications . Evidence of the in?uence of Prof. Pawlak's work can be seen in the growth in the rough-set literature that now includes over 4000 3 publications by more than 1600 authors in the rough set database as well as 4 the growth and maturity of the International Rough Set Society. Numerous 5 biographies of Zdzis law Pawlak have been published . This volume of the TRS presents papers that re?ect the profound in?uence of a number of research initiatives by Zdzis law Pawlak.
