In 'Multiculturalism and diversity' kijkt Bernice Lott door de bril van de sociale psychologie om de betekenis en reikwijdte van cultuur en de relatie tussen cultuur en diversiteit te verhelderen. Lott stelt dat elk individu in onze maatschappij 'multicultureel' is en ze focust op de verschillende dimensies van cultuur en hoe die een persoon maken tot wie hij is: cultuur beïnvloedt niet alleen iemands zelfbeeld maar ook zijn gedrag en sociale interactie.

Dit Engelstalige kinderboek begint met de woorden: I am a story. So are you. Aan de hand van zijn eigen levensverhaal laat de auteur zien dat iedereen een verhaal heeft dat hem of haar uniek maakt. Hij legt uit dat elk verhaal bestaat uit veel verschillende elementen, zoals je familie en je naam, waar je wel of niet van houdt, en misschien zelfs tot welk ras je behoort. Vervolgens vraagt hij zich af hoe het komt dat, hoewel 'ras' slechts een deel van je verhaal is, mensen er zoveel belang aan hechten. Hij verklaart dat we soms teveel met ras bezig zijn en dat we op basis van iemands huidskleur allerlei veronderstellingen maken. De tekst wordt ondersteund door kleurrijke illustraties. Het boek kan een aanzet zijn voor een filosofisch gesprek over het begrip ras en hoe raciale identiteit een invloed heeft op hoe we naar elkaar kijken. Sinds het verschijnen van de eerste editie van deze studie in 1981 geldt de Nederlandse professor Geert Hofstede wereldwijd als één van de grondleggers van het vergelijkend intercultureel onderzoek. Deze studie is gebaseerd op de gegevens van een grootschalige enquête onder het personeel van de afdelingen in 72 landen van het bedrijf IBM. Op basis van de analyse van de database met meer dan 116.000 ingevulde vragenlijsten ontwikkelde Hofstede een model met vijf dimensies als graadmeter voor cultuurverschillen: machtsafstand, individualisme versus collectivisme, masculiniteit versus feminiteit, onzekerheidsvermijding en lange- versus kortetermijndenken. Dit is een verkorte editie van het oorspronkelijk onderzoek, in 2001 verscheen een nieuwe, herwerkte editie van 'Culture's consequences'.

Neerslag van een studiedag die in maart 1999 georganiseerd werd door het Universitair Centrum voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (UCOS) en het Centrum Leo Apostel (CLEA). Doel: de vaststelling onderzoeken dat communicatieproblemen tussen culturen veelal te maken hebben met het anders denken over en het anders zien en beleven van de realiteit. In die context bogen de auteurs zich over een aantal vragen: Is het "andere" werkelijk zo onoverbrugbaar "anders"? Of is dit slechts een interpretatie? En zijn er in de realiteit niet veel meer gelijkenissen dan we vermoeden? Hebben we niet sedert geruime tijd dezelfde soort basisuitgangspunten als de nieuwste bevindingen in de wetenschappen erbij betrokken worden - bijvoorbeeld in verband met ruimte en tijd? Enerzijds willen de auteurs kennissystemen uit andere culturen "de-exotiseren" via een vergelijking met de nieuwste bevindingen in de wetenschap. Anderzijds zijn ze van mening dat ook de wetenschappen baat kunnen hebben bij een vergelijking met enkele elementen uit de Afrikaanse kennissystemen.

Etnocentrisme, racisme, xenofobie zijn termen die regelmatig opduiken, doorgaans op die momenten waar niet de houding zelf maar bepaalde van haar afgeleide gedragingen (zoals discriminatie, extreem rechts stemgedrag, etnische spanningen ...) de samenleving opschrikken. Dan wordt al snel geschermd met verschillende verklaringen voor die houdingen en dat gedrag. Deze stemmen soms overeen met wat wetenschappelijk onderzoek vindt, vaak ook niet.In de duiding van etnocentrisme staan verschillende wetenschappelijke verklaringswijzen bovendien naast elkaar, zelfs niet echt als concurrerende verklaringen, maar letterlijk naast elkaar als buren die elkaar negeren. Wie de literatuur over etnocentrisme overloopt, stelt vast dat de oorsprong van die houding in drie soorten werkelijkheden worden gezocht: de natuur, de persoonlijkheid en de sociale omstandigheden. In het onderzoek waarover Vreemden rapporteert, ligt de nadruk vooral op de sociale omstandigheden.Veel onderzoek naar die omstandigheden heeft overwegend of zelfs uitsluitend aandacht gehad voor de materiële condities waarin mensen leven. Die blijken echter niet (meer) zo belangrijk voor de verklaring van etnisch vooroordeel. Daarom worden in dit boek de culturele verklaringen centraal geplaatst. Dat zijn de verschillende factoren die een invloed hebben op de wijze waarop mensen denken en voelen. Uit het gerapporteerde onderzoek blijkt dat etnocentrisme wordt beïnvloed door het gezin waarin men opgroeit, de school die men bezoekt, de zenders die men bekijkt. De rol van gezin, onderwijs en media krijgt bijzondere aandacht. Bovenal verschijnt etnocentrisme hier echter als een houding waarmee mensen zin geven aan de situatie waarin ze geplaatst zijn, zich positioneren ten opzichte van anderen, strevend naar zelfrespect en zoeken naar een verantwoording van hun gevoelens

In dit boek wordt een vergelijkende analyse gepresenteerd van een achttal sociale bewegingen in België en Nederland. De grondslag van deze bewegingen varieert van sekse en seksuele voorkeur, via patiënt-zijn tot religie en etniciteit. Het gaat hier zowel om de identiteitsaspecten van de verschillende bewegingen als om de politieke context waarin zij functioneren. De vrouwenbeweging en de homobeweging zijn twee goede voorbeelden van sociale bewegingen met een sterke identiteitscomponent en van bewegingen die zich in de politieke arena begeven. In de bijdragen 'Op zoek naar de vrouwenbeweging in de jaren negentig' en 'Homoseksuelen: een nieuwe minderheid in ontzuilend door deze dubbele bril bekeken door respectievelijk Joyce Oudshoorn en Jan Willem Duyvendak. Dit boek bevat bijdragen over acht sociale bewegingen in Nederland en België: homoseksuelen in Nederland, de vrouwenbeweging, de witte beweging in België (naar aanleiding van pedofilieschandalen), de patiëntenbeweging, de antiracistische beweging in België, Molukse netwerken in Nederland, Moslims in de Nederlandse politiek en een Nederlandse protestantse beweging. De grondslag van deze sociale bewegingen varieert sterk, maar het zijn allemaal bewegingen die gebaseerd zijn op een bepaalde groepsidentiteit. Er is bijzondere aandacht voor de interactie van deze sociale bewegingen met de politiek.
