De boekensector bevindt zich in woelig water. Niet alleen moet het boek het opnemen tegen allerlei spectaculaire vrijetijdsbestedingen, ook de stijgende populariteit van digitale boeken en online verkoop betekent extra concurrentie voor bibliotheek en boekhandel.Toch zijn het boeiende en kansrijke tijden voor bibliothecarissen en boekverkopers die van de platgetreden paden willen treden. Er zijn immers nog steeds genoeg boekenliefhebbers, alleen willen ze op een andere manier aangesproken worden: ze willen meer inspraak en verwachten - al is het onbewust - niets minder dan een onvergetelijke belevenis.Dat is ook exact wat dit boek doet: lezers bijzondere ervaringen bezorgen. How can the public library fulfil its classic social mission in our individualized and sometimes fragmented society? And how does such a library fit into the urban public space, in which commerce and consumption seem to reign supreme? This requires innovative architecture, the strength of imagination and the willingness to think countercyclically.In Imagination and Participation librarians Rob Bruijnzeels and Joyce Sternheim examine the most important transitions in public library work. They spoke with experts and Dutch and Flemish top architects who have designed public libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. These conversations and the authors? own insights and experiences have resulted in a new perspective on contemporary library work that has been translated into starting points for the future architecture of public libraries.The authors have been working on the transition of library work and its consequences for the architecture and design of library buildings for quite some time. More than just book repositories, libraries can become bulwarks against some of the most crucial challenges of our age: unequal access to education, jobs, and information. In BiblioTech, educator and technology expert John Palfrey argues that anyone seeking to participate in the 21st century needs to understand how to find and use the vast stores of information available online. And libraries, which play a crucial role in making these skills and information available, are at risk. De manier waarop we cultuur maken, verspreiden, bewaren en eraan participeren, is door de informatie- en communicatietechnologie ingrijpend aan het veranderen. De impact wordt soms vergeleken met de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst. ‘E-cultuur’ staat voor een nieuw cultureel paradigma dat volop in ontwikkeling is.De mogelijkheden zijn fascinerend, de vragen talrijk.De omvang en reikwijdte van de veranderingen daagt ook de overheid uit. Welk kader kan het Vlaamse cultuurbeleid aanreiken om de transities mogelijk te maken en te begeleiden? Welke pistes dienen zich aan om een integraal Vlaams e-cultuurbeleid vorm te geven?Dit boek reikt materiaal aan om het debat te voeren. Het schetst de maatschappelijke context, gaat in op de eigenschappen van e-cultuur en geeft een stand van zaken voor Vlaanderen en Europa. Aan de hand van talrijke praktijkvoorbeelden wordt het thema belicht in de diverse culturele velden.
