This volume refers to medium-sized panels and fragments of stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 18th century, found in public buildings, churches, museums and private collections in the present five provinces of Flanders (Belgium). The present volume contains the panels and fragments encountered and researched by the authors since they started their research more than thirty years ago. Many of these panels and fragments are totally unknown to the public as they have never been displayed, nor published. Nevertheless they demonstrate an important aspect of stained-glass production and stained-glass conservation. Where large windows in churches are well known to the public, it is often forgotten that even more stained glass was created for dwellings of the noble or patricians, house chapels, guild rooms, smaller spaces in abbeys, etc. It also became clear that virtually no glass was thrown away and larger fragments and panes were recycled as ‘stop gaps’ or integrated in composite panels, the so called ‘vitraux d’antiquaires’. Furthermore archaeological sites nearly always reveal quite small pieces of glass, which could not be used for repairs or as ‘cullet’ in the glass production cycle. A selection of these archaeological finds is also presented in this volume. At the end of this volume ‘Addenda’ to the previous volumes are also added.

The Journal of the American Institute for Conservation (JAIC) is an international peer-reviewed periodical for the art conservation profession. The Journal publishes articles on treatment case studies, current issues, materials research, and technical analyses relating to the conservation and preservation of historic and cultural works. The topics encompass a broad range of specialties including architectural materials, archeological objects, books and paper, ethnographic materials, objects, paintings, photographic materials, sculpture, and wooden artifacts. Started as the Bulletin of the International Institute for Conservation-American Group (IIC-AG), in April 1961, the Journal matured into its current form in 1977. Since that time JAIC has become a repository for the core body of conservation information through its documentation of new materials, changing methods, and developing standards in the conservation profession. The four-color publication is distributed three times a year to AIC members and museum, library, and university subscribers.

This premier volume of the Getty Conservation Institute's Readings in Conservation series is the first comprehensive collection of texts on the conservation of art and architecture to be published in the English language. Designed for students of art history as well as conservation, the book consists of forty-six texts, some never before translated into English and many originally published only in obscure or foreign journals. The thirty major art historians and scholars represented raise questions such as when to restore, what to preserve, and how to maintain aesthetic character. Excerpts have been selected from the following books and essays: John Ruskin, The Seven Lamps of Architecture; Bernard Berenson, Aesthetics and History in the Visual Arts; Clive Bell, The Aesthetic Hypothesis; Cesare Brandi, Theory of Restoration; Kenneth Clark, Looking at Pictures; Erwin Panofsky, The History of Art as a Humanistic Discipline; E. H. Gombrich, Art and Illusion; Marie Cl. Berducou, The Conservation of Archaeology; and Paul Philippot, Restoration from the Perspective of the Social Sciences. The fully illustrated book also contains an annotated bibliography and an index.
