"Explores the controversial concept of Deaf-Same ("I am deaf, you are deaf, so we are the same")and its influence of deaf spaces locally and globally"-- "It's a Small World explores the fascinating and, at times, controversial concept of DEAF-SAME ("I am deaf, you are deaf, and so we are the same") and its influence on deaf spaces locally and globally. The editors and contributors focus on national and international encounters (e.g., conferences, sporting events, arts festivals, camps) and the role of political/economic power structures on deaf lives and the creation of deaf worlds. They also consider important questions about how deaf people negotiate DEAF-SAME and deaf difference, with particular attention to relations between deaf people in the global South (countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with access to fewer resources than other countries) and the global North (countries in Europe, along with Canada, the US, Australia, and several other nations with access to and often control of resources). Editors Michele Friedner and Annelies Kusters and their contributors represent a variety of academic and professional fields, from anthropology and linguistics to cultural and religious studies. Each chapter in this original volume highlights a new perspective on the multiple intersections that occur between nationalities, cultures, languages, religions, races, genders, and identities. The text is organized into five sections--Gatherings, Language, Projects, Networks, and Visions. Taken all together, the 23 chapters in this book provide an understanding of how sameness and difference are powerful yet contested categories in deaf worlds"--

"Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.Have you ever thought seriously about your refrigerator? The box humming in the background actually displays who you are and the society in which you live. This book examines the past, present, and future of the electric household refrigerator with an eye towards preventing its users from ever taking it for granted again. No mere container for cold Cokes and celery stalks, the refrigerator is actually more like a mirror-and what it reflects is chilling indeed.Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in the The Atlantic"--

"Sewing patterns have been the principle blueprint for making garments in the home for centuries. From their origins in the tailoring manuals of the 16th century to the widely produced pamphlets of the 18th and 19th centuries, through to the full size packet patterns of today, their history and development has reflected major changes in technology (such as the advent of the sewing machine), retailing and marketing practices (the fashion periodical), and shifts in social and cultural influences. This accessible book explores this history, outlining innovations in patternmaking by the companies who produced patterns and how these reflected the fashions and demands of the market. Showcasing beautiful illustrations from original pattern pamphlets, packets and ads, as well as 9 complete patterns from which readers can reproduce vintage garments of different eras, the book provides a unique visual guide to homemade fashions as well as essential exploration of the industry that produced them"--

"A material, literary, and cultural exploration of how the remote control, a seemingly innocuous media accessory, impacts our perception and world-view"-- "While we all use remote controls, we understand little about their history or their impact on our daily lives. By emphasizing volume control, channel shifting, and multi-function management, they tell a story about our experience of mass media, culture, and domestic life. Remote controls reveal the deep impact electronics design has on our self-perception and world-view. This book offers lively analyses of the remote control's material, literary, and cultural history to explain how such an innocuous media accessory can change the way we occupy our houses, interact with our families, and experience the world. From the first wired radio remotes of the 1920s to infrared universal remotes, from the homemade TV controllers to the Apple Remote, remote controls shape our media devices and how we live with them"--

"When historians take women's movements and gender differences in organizations . . . seriously, this book will become part of the canon. . . . a forthright effort to view women's participation in politics in exciting new ways."--American Historical Review"The work not only fills a gap in knowledge of women's radical politics, but also addresses current concerns of feminist scholars." --Choice"The book brings us something of the excitement of the revolutionary possibility lived by these women--and the frustration of their encounter with male resistance to including women's emancipation in the revolutionary program."--Signs"Theirs is a story of commitment and creativity, of steadfastness and practicality, of communal endeavour and the bleak individual fate of defeat, hardship, and exile."--Gender and History"Ackelsberg, in the roles of both historian and activist, has crafted a volume that speaks to a wide variety of interests. . . . Her story is rich with the memories and voices of women . . . "--The Women's Review of Books"The author examines the autonomous women's liberation organization in late-1930s Spain, which represented an alternative to the individualistic perspectives characterizing mainstream feminist movements of the time." --Smith Alumnae Quarterly" . . . particularly strong on the ideology and organization of this radical women's group of the late 1930s." --Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies Bulletin"Ackelsberg gives the reader a fine explanation of the Spanish events, the general perspective of anarchism and the inspiring goals and struggles of Mujeres Libres." --Fifth EstateAckelsberg explores the development of Mujeres Libres, founded in 1936 during the Civil War in Spain as an organization dedicated to the liberation of women from their triple enslavement--to ignorance, as women, and as producers.
