'Dit is het boek van een lezer. In de loop van een jaar of dertig heeft mijn omgang met literatuur zich van onschuldige tijdspassering tot verslaving ontwikkeld, een, als we Bilderdijk mogen geloven, levensbedreigende ziekte waarvan de patiënt zelden geheel herstelt.' Zo opent Piet Gerbrandy deze essaybundel. Hoe zorgwekkend het met hem gesteld is blijkt al spoedig: Gerbrandy schrijft met evenveel gemak over de vroegste klassieken als over de nieuwste Nederlandse poëzie. En ergens onderweg komt hij dan ook nog dichters als Vondel en Bilderdijk tegen. Gerbrandy gaat ervan uit dat elke tekst, ook in de poëzie, de lezers wil overtuigen, en hij laat zien hoe dat gebeurt. Zo strekt het boek zich uit van de pure poëzie tot de rest van de maatschappij. De schrijver schrikt niet terug voor een ontmaskerende analyse van een toespraak van Tony Blair, maar toont ook in zijn commentaar op de hervormingen in het Nederlandse onderwijs zijn gedreven interesse in een betere wereld.
