Dit boek, dat handelt over een uiterst actueel onderwerp, namelijk multiculturaliteit, is echter meer dan een zoveelste beschouwing of theorie hierover. Om te beginnen is het een immanente kritiek van het moderne discours. Multiculturaliteit toont duidelijk aan hoe dit discours tekortschiet wanneer het erop aankomt verschillende culturen niet alleen naast maar ook vooral met elkaar te laten leven. In tweede instantie wordt multiculturaliteit in dit werk een maatschappelijk werktuig, een methode om het klassieke moderne discours dat vooral gericht is op economie en technologie te overstijgen. Vanuit dit perspectief is het een uitdieping van democratie. Multiculturaliteit, in tegenstelling met wat sommigen willen doen geloven, is dus geen zoveelste ideologie. Ten slotte brengt dit boek een heel originele benadering van het onderwerp, namelijk een tijdsbenadering. De auteur toont ons hoe de methode die gericht is op praktijk, een specifieke tijd creëert. Hij nodigt ons tevens uit om met hem een reis te beginnen waarvan het traject niet vooraf is uitgestippeld.

Waar voorheen 'integratie met behoud van identiteit' stelregel was, vindt men nu dat allochtonen zich sterker moeten oriënteren op de Nederlandse samenleving. De overheid wil dit vooral realiseren door lokaal beleid: op het niveau van de stad, wijk en straat proberen beleidsmakers ontmoetingen te stimuleren en fysieke en sociale grenzen te slechten via het mengen van bewoners, sporters en scholieren. Een beroepsgroep die regelmatig als 'bondgenoot' bij het mengen wordt betrokken is het opbouwwerk. Deze professie is weer helemaal terug van weggeweest. Maar waar werken opbouwwerkers precies aan mee? Welk beeld van sociale integratie ligt achter dit beleid besloten? In dit boek worden uiteenlopende maatschappelijke terreinen en de daar gevoerde politiek van menging en sociale integratie met elkaar vergeleken naar praktijk, theorie, beleid en resultaten.
