Met het vertrouwen in de democratie is het slecht gesteld. De kloof tussen burger en politiek is onverminderd groot. Burgers hebben weinig geloof in de kwaliteit van de politieke besluitvorming en politici worden herhaaldelijk voor verrassingen gesteld waarmee ze moeilijk om weten te gaan. Oplossingen voor deze situatie worden gezocht in versterking van de democratie, maar hebben degenen die meer democratie voorstaan zelf wel vertrouwen in de kwaliteit van democratische besluiten? Of denken ook zij, net als hun tegenstanders, dat democratie in wezen een beetje dom is? In Vertrouwen in democratie bestrijdt politiek filosoof Herman van Gunsteren de stelling dat democratie 'dom' zou zijn. Van Gunsteren onderzoekt of de principes van zelforganisatie zoals die in de recente wetenschappelijke literatuur naar voren zijn gekomen toepasbaar zijn op de politiek.
