S'il y avait un courant "nouvelle histoire de l'art" comme il y a une nouvelle philosophie, René Huygue pourrait en être le parrain. A la fois néoromantique et antimatérialiste, prônant un art "désengagé" mais combattant depuis près de trois quarts de siècle pour le développement d'une éducation esthétique, revalorisant des notions délaissées : âme, esprit, qualité, finalité, René Huyghe fuit tous les déterminismes, qu'ils soient biologiques, sociologiques ou psychologiques. Ces entretiens retracent l'ambiance culturelle des milieux artistiques et intellectuels d'avant-guerre, les rencontres de René Huyghe avec Valéry, Giraudoux, Picasso..., la naissance d'une revue : l'Amour de l'art. Ils sont aussi une suite d'interrogations sur la pensée de Huyghe depuis le Dialogue avec le visible en 1955 jusqu'à Formes et forces en 1971, suivant un itinéraire qui part de la question : qu'est-ce qu'une oeuvre d'art sous ses aspects formels et esthétiques ? pour aboutir à : pourquoi de l'art dans la nature et chez l'homme ? Ils sont ainsi une suite de leçons sur l'art et l'esprit et un dialogue entre deux formes de vision du monde où Simon Monneret joue le rôle du philosophe sceptique face à celui du penseur gnostique.

Met de hele hand of met een gestrekte vinger, met een potlood of met een spuitbus, de mens houdt nooit op sporen te maken die een betekenis dragen. De wetenschap kan die tekens verzamelen en ontleden, de toegepaste kunst kan ze tot mooie maaksels verfijnen. Maar wie kan er zich beter op bezinnen dan de kunstenaar die zijn verbeelding met de gewilde eenvoud van de meetkunde uitwerkt ? Het werk van Verstockt heet "geometrisch abstract" of "constructief", begrijp : zijn maakgebaren onderwerpt hij aan een beperkt aantal spelregels, die hem een eindeloze reeks mogelijkheden bieden. En zo zal hij zich, eerder en dieper dan de semioloog of de graficus, verwonderen om de betekeniskracht van de tekens die hij laat ontstaan, en zal hij deze verwondering uiten in een nieuwsgierige aandacht naar hetgeen alle tekens gemeen hebben. Wanneer hij een vlak met een lijn in links en rechts scheidt, of in boven en onder, wanneer hij met twee lijnen die elkaar snijden een vereniging, of een tegenstelling, oproept, met een vierkant het stevige of het geslotene, met een kring het eigene of het eeuwige, dan herinnert dit alles hem, achteraf, aan de ontelbare keren waarop de mens sporen in dezelfde zin heeft nagelaten, en dat waarschijnlijk zal blijven doen, hoe onduidelijk de betekenis van het teken ook mag zijn. Dit boek is hier het boeiend verslag van. In zijn bezinning, en in zijn onderzoek, ervaart Verstockt de wording van de betekenis, van alle tekens, en de neerslag van die ervaring is dan ook veel meer dan een uitleg, of een verklaring : De Genesis van de Vorm deelt op aanstekelijke wijze een verwondering mee, ongeveer zoals dat in een kunstwerk gebeurt.
