Written by a leading authority and artist of the historical transverse flute, The Notation Is Not the Music offers invaluable insight into the issues of historically informed performance and the parameters-and limitations-of notation-dependent performance. As Barthold Kuijken illustrates, performers of historical music should consider what is written on the page as a mere steppingstone for performance. Only by continual examination and reexamination of the sources to discover original intent can an early music practitioner come close to authentic performance.

No longer do pianists play all keyboard music as if it was written in the later nineteenth century. Today everyone recognizes that each period has its own style, wich must be observed if a piece is to be properly performed. It is one thing to recognized this, another to know how to carry it into effect. Keyboard interpretation answers this need. Howard Ferguson is one of the leading world authorities on the subject. He here provides a clear, detailed, practical guide to authentichity in performance wich all keyboard players - amateur, student, or professional - should find indispensable

Why do we feel the need to perform music in a historically informed style? Is this need related to wider cultural concerns? In this 2002 study, John Butt sums up debates on the nature of the early music movement and historically informed performance, calling upon a seemingly inexhaustible fund of ideas gleaned from historical musicology, analytic philosophy, literary theory, historiography and theories of modernism and postmodernism. He develops the critical views of both supporters and detractors of the movement, while claiming ultimately that it has more intellectual and artistic potential than its detractors may have assumed. He also asks whether the phenomenon of historically informed performance reflects changes in the culture of western music and how it, in turn, may have influenced that culture, particularly in regard to such issues as the status of the composer, the work, intentionality and notation.
