Abstract

The last two decades have been an exciting and richly productive period for debate and academic research on the city. The SAGE Handbook of New Urban Studies offers comprehensive coverage of this modern re-thinking of urban theory, both gathering together the best of what has been achieved so far, and signalling the way to future theoretical insights and empirically grounded research.Featuring many of the top international names in the field, the handbook is divided into nine key sections:?SECTION 1: THE GLOBALIZED CITY?SECTION 2: URBAN ENTREPRENEURIALISM, BRANDING, GOVERNANCE?SECTION 3: MARGINALITY, RISK AND RESILIENCE?SECTION 4: SUBURBS AND SUBURBANIZATION: STRATIFICATION, SPRAWL, SUSTAINABILITY?SECTION 5: DISTINCTIVE AND VISIBLE CITIES?SECTION 6: CREATIVE CITIES?SECTION 7: URBANIZATION, URBANITY AND URBAN LIFESTYLES?SECTION 8: NEW DIRECTIONS IN URBAN THEORY?SECTION 9: URBAN FUTURES Bron: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/the-sage-handbook-of-new-urban-studies/book228284

Abstract

For a decade, Ken Schles watched the passing of time from his Lower East Side neighborhood. His camera fixed the instances of his observations, and these moments became the foundation of his invisible city. Friends and architecture come under the scrutiny of his lens and, when sorted and viewed in the pages of this book, a remarkable achievement of personal vision emerges. Twenty-five years later, Invisible City still has the ability to transfix the viewer. A penetrating and intimate portrayal of a world few had entrance to - or means of egress from - Invisible City stands alongside Brassai's Paris de Nuit and van der Elsken's Love On The Left Bank as one of the twentieth century's great depictions of nocturnal bohemian experience. Documenting his life in New York City's East Village during its heyday in the tumultuous 1980s, Schles captured its look and attitude in delirious and dark honesty. Long out of print, this missing link in the history of the photo book is now once again made available. Using scans from the original negatives and Steidl's quadratone technique to bring out nuance and detail never seen before, this new edition transcends the original of this underground cult classic.

Abstract

By drawing together widely dispersed yet central writings, the 'Berlin Reader' is an essential resource for everyone interested in urban development in one of the most interesting and important metropolises in Europe. It provides scholars as well as students, journalists and visitors with an overview of the most central discussions on the tremendous changes Berlin experienced since the fall of the wall. It covers a wide range of issues, including inner city renewal, housing and the local economy, gentrification and other urban conflicts. The book breaks ground in two dimensions: first, by offering also non-German speakers an insight into the very controversial debates after reunification, and, second, by highlighting the ambivalent consequences of Berlin's urban transformation in the past decades.www.transcript-verlag.de

Abstract

This book engages with the thorny question of global urban political agency. It critically assesses the now popular statement that in the context of paralysed and failing nation state governments, cities can and will provide leadership in addressing global challenges. Cities can act politically on the global scale, but the analysis of global urban political agency needs to be firmly embedded in the field of urban studies. Collectively, the chapters in this volume contextualize urban agency in time and space and pluralize it by looking at how urban agency is nurtured through coalitions between a wide range of public and private actors. The authors develop and critically assess the conceptual underpinnings of the notion of global urban political agency from a variety of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. The second part contains several (theoretically informed) empirical analyses of global urban political agency in cities around the globe. This book geographically expands analysis by looking beyond global cities in diverse contexts.
