Theories, methods and skills are the bedrock of all social work practice; yet how they are used varies according to the needs of the client and the practice context. In this brilliantly systematic and comprehensive text, Karen Healy provides an integrated approach to social work methods and skills. Recognizing social work as a diverse activity that is rooted in common foundations, she explains how practice both shapes and is shaped by professional purpose. In particular, she: - Advocates a dynamic generalist model for working with individuals, families, groups and organizations- Provides a rigorous account of practice methods, influenced by critical social work theory, systems theory, strengths perspectives and research evidence- Presents each method with unrivalled clarity and analytic coherence, using a range of exercises and reflective material to support personal engagement and understanding. Social Work Methods and Skills offers a step-by-step discussion of social work practice that will empower readers to develop and refine their professional toolkit for purposeful and innovative interventions. It is an essential resource for any social work student or practitioner looking to build, or consolidate, their understanding of the range of methods and skills available for effective professional practice.

Events in people's lives can have a profound impact; anything from moving house or losing a job to the death of a loved one or a natural disaster can push an individual into a state of crisis. Crisis intervention is a brief therapy and immediate response which aims to support the person through the crisis period. This book covers the different influences on crisis therapies and traces the development of crisis theory across its different phases. Each chapter explores a different approach, including psychoanalytic; cognitive, which includes motivational interviewing; systemic; and, radical and social construction, which covers solution focused therapy and enhancing resilience. Chapters on the developmental, behavioural, and post-traumatic approaches are also included, and the final chapter illustrates an integrated framework drawing on our knowledge of crisis so far. Case studies are featured throughout to demonstrate the theories and therapies in practice.

Down syndrome is one of the most commonly occurring developmental disorders and it is now possible to conceptualize and define opportunities for neurocognitive rehabilitation for those with the condition. The leading journalist on Pakistan lays out America's options with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the post-Bin Laden years. What are the possibilities-and hazards-facing America as it withdraws from Afghanistan and as it reviews its long engagement in Pakistan ? Where is the Taliban now in both these countries ? What does the immediate future hold and what are America's choices as President Obama considers our complicated history and faces reelection ?These are some of the crucial questions that Ahmed Rashid- Pakistan's preeminent journalist-takes on in this follow-up to his acclaimed Descent into Chaos. Rashid correctly predicted that the Iraq war would have to be refocused into Afghanistan and that Pakistan would emerge as the leading player through which American interests and actions would have to be directed. Now, as Washington and the rest of the West wrestle with negotiating with unreliable and unstable "allies" in Pakistan, there is no better guide to the dark future than Ahmed Rashid. He focuses on the long-term problems-the changing casts of characters, the future of international terrorism, and the actual policies and strategies both within Pakistan and Afghanistan and among the Western allies-as the world tries to bring some stability to a fractured region saddled with a legacy of violence and corruption. The decisions made by America and the West will affect the security and safety of the world. And as he has done so well in the past, Rashid offers sensible solutions and provides a way forward for all three countries.Bron : http://www.amazon.com
