A challenge to the conventional wisdom surrounding financial risk, providing insight into why easy solutions to control the financial system are doomed to failFinance plays a key role in the prosperity of the modern world-but it also brings grave dangers. We seek to manage those threats with a vast array of sophisticated mathematical tools and techniques of financial risk management. Too often, though, we fail to address the greatest risk-the peril posed by our own behavior.Jon Danielsson argues that critical risk is generated from within, through the interactions of individuals and perpetuated by their beliefs, objectives, abilities, and prejudices. He asserts that the widespread belief that risk originates outside the financial system frustrates our ability to measure and manage it, and the likely consequences of new regulations will help alleviate small-scale risks but, perversely, encourage excessive risk taking. People's behaviour over the last 25 years (1971-1996) shows - in the moste widely differing fields - the classical pattern of a rising long wave of anxiety, which is now beginning drastically to fall. The prospect of falling wave of anxiety - which corresponds with a rising wave in the economy - makes it possible to prognosticate changes of taste, values and behaviour for the next two decades. To gain a precise insight into this, we need some prior knowledge of the long waves of the economy, of anxiety-driven behaviour and of the functionality of behaviour with regard to underlying psychological needs. So, the book begins by interweaving three theories and ends with the presentation of twenty concrete future behavioural trends.

While it seems that the recession is coming to an end in many parts of Europe, challenges for the EU's labour markets and social security systems remain. Dynamic Modeling of Musculoskeletal Motion introduces biomechanists to modern methods of modeling and analyzing dynamic biomechanical systems in three dimensions. Using vector kinematics, the reader is taught a systematic method which significantly reduces the complexity of working with multiple, moving limb segments in three dimensions. Operations which usually require the application of differential calculus are replaced by simple algebraic formulae. To derive dynamical equations of motion, a practical introduction to Kane's Method is given. Kane's Method builds upon the foundation of vector kinematics and represents one of the most exciting theoretical developments of the modern era. Together, these techniques enable biomechanists to decipher and model living systems with great realism, efficiency and accuracy. Interwoven with the theoretical presentation are chapters and examples which highlight the subtle differences between inanimate linkages and the biomechanical systems we seek to understand.
