A compendious overview of the revered and subversive queer Canadian collectivePublished on the occasion of the huge retrospective General Idea at the National Gallery of Canada, Ontario, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2022?2023), this volume constitutes the most comprehensive source on the Canadian collective General Idea, founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal, and AA Bronson, and active until the death of Partz and Zontal in 1994.The volume is arranged in three parts: I. Performances and Actions; II. In the Streets; III. In the Showroom. The first two parts focus on works and methods that extend beyond the traditional museum exhibition, documenting ephemeral, time-based, and even disposable works. The third part includes a plates section offering a near-complete visual survey of General Idea?s practice. Facing-page comparative images show works as they appeared in historical installations and other relevant contexts. These three sections correspond broadly to the collective?s development: from performances, actions, pageants, and other practices (1969?1978), through works engaging with mass media formats such as the magazine, broadcast television, and video (1972?1980s), moving finally to works conceived for galleries and museums (1985?1994).bron : https://jrp-editions.com/art/books/monographs-artists-books/general-idea/

Marcel Broodthaers?s work is characterized by a complex exploration of the relationship of text and image. This catalogue raisonné, prepared by WIELS and developed in close collaboration with the Marcel Broodthaers Succession, is the first to include all of the Belgian conceptual artist?s industrial poems created between 1968 and 1972. Borrowing from the aesthetics of industrially manufactured plastic signs, Broodthaers?s multi-layered, often enigmatic pictorial poems testify to his interest in the entanglements of language, punctuation, and symbols. In blurring the boundaries between word and image, painting and object, new levels of meaning are made visible. The index is supplemented by a collection of Broodthaers?s drawings, writings and ?open letters? as well as scholarly contributions that position the poems as a crucial group of works within the artist?s oeuvre.Marcel Broodthaers (1924?1976) developed his poèmes industriels simultaneously to his seminal work, the Musée d?Art Moderne, Département des Aigles. They form an important element in the development of his fictional museum, a central work of institutional critique.https://www.copyrightbookshop.be/shop/marcel-broodthaers-industrial-poems/

Between the late 1980s and 2020, from the end of the Reagan era to the beginning of Covid, the New York-based artist and author Kenneth Goldsmith collected hundreds of classified ads and other advertising posters from the streets of the city. Hilarious, offbeat, absurd and sometimes breathtakingly beautiful, the ads are united by their unpredictability as well as their total lack of utility. Whether or not they intentionally drew from the aesthetics of Art Brut, Cubism or concrete poetry, they align in any case with the basic thesis of artistic modernity: to take an object and to divert it from any practical aim.Across the 500 pages of this volume, Goldsmith traces almost 40 years of American history as told from the margins, through his personal collection of objects made by ?street poets and other visionaries.? Through detailed introductions to each chapter, Goldsmith reflects on the boundaries between art and advertisement, as well as the notion of insider and outsider artists.Bron : https://www.copyrightbookshop.be/shop/nyc-street-poets-and-visionaries-are-you-free-on-saturday-from-4-7-p-m/

A global overview of how contemporary artists incorporate text and the written word into work that speaks to someof the most pressing issues of the 21st century. Digital communication has seen the word as text permeate life in ways that the poets and artists of yesterday could never have imagined. Presenting a history of word- and book-based art, and examining major areas where the word has dominated artistic practice, this book takes us on a fascinating and richly illustrated global tour of diverse contemporary art forms. What value can text hold in the sphere of visual art? How is such text different from poetry? Can the poetic itself be visual art, or is text in this context consigned to the realms of gimmick and catchphrase? Looking at the work of a broad range of artists including Bruce Nauman, Julien Breton, Jeremy Deller, Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer, Shirin Neshat and many more, The Word is Art examines each of these questions, contending above all that in the digital age, words have become more important than ever. With the advent of texting and social media, many predicted the debasement of language, and some have pointed to evidence of this in our so-called ?post-truth? culture. Michael Petry demonstrates that, on the contrary, words remain critical, powerful and central to art practice.

Published to accompany the first UK retrospective of Olafur Eliasson's work, this book is conceived as an illustrated `field guide' to his practice. Featuring a substantial conversation between the artist and the Tate curator Mark Godfrey, as well as a range of short dialogues with a strikingly varied range of people working both inside and outside the arts - from anthropology, economics, political science, and biology to architecture and urbanism, dance, music, and food - the book provides readers with a "compass" to Eliasson's thinking: a 360-degree view of the frames of reference that inform his work. Eliasson builds such conversations into his daily life and work. They help him not only to understand other people's unique fields of knowledge, but also to ask, `What does my understanding of your knowledge do to my understanding of the world?', and touch on topics as wide-ranging as the social and cultural factors that contribute to social trust, the `topography' of scent, the chronobiological effects of light, public space and civic infrastructure, and the power of art. The interweaving of these texts with stunning photography of his remarkable and immersive works provides an insight into what Eliasson calls his ongoing aim of "reaching out into the world". Exhibition: Tate Modern, London, UK (11.07.2019-05.01.2020).
