Kinderen en jeugdigen met ernstige gedragsproblemen trekken een zware wissel op hun omgeving. Zowel ouders, leraren als hulpverleners in de jeugdzorg zitten geregeld met hun handen in het haar. Doorsnee pedagogische kwaliteiten blijken onvoldoende effect te hebben, zéker wanneer het jongeren met psychiatrische problematiek in combinatie met stevige gedragsproblemen betreft, waarbij de gezinsstructuur ernstig ontregeld is. Oorzaak en gevolg van de gedragsproblemen zijn dan vaak lastig te ontrafelen. De ontregelde omgevingsstructuur heeft vervolgens weer een negatief effect op de gedachten, gevoelens en relatiedefinitie van de jongere waardoor zijn negatieve visie op de omgeving dieper bevestigd raakt en de oppositie steeds heviger wordt. Een negatieve spiraal waar met de beste intenties maar moeizaam uit te komen is, en de prognoses niet zonnig blijken te zijn.In dit boek wordt de uit onderzoek gebleken effectieve behandeling vertaald naar de alledaagse praktijk op groepen, in scholen en in samenwerking met de ouders.
