Abstract

Recent global appropriations of public spaces through urban activism, public uprising, and political protest have brought back democratic values, beliefs, and practices that have been historically associated with cities. Given the aggressive commodification of public resources, public space is critically important due to its capacity to enable forms of public discourse and social practice which are fundamental for the well-being of democratic societies. Public Space Reader brings together public space scholarship by a cross-disciplinary group of academics and specialists whose essays consider fundamental questions: What is public space and how does it manifest larger cultural, social, and political processes? How are public spaces designed, socially and materially produced, and managed? How does this impact the nature and character of public experience? What roles does it play in the struggles for the just city, and the Right to The City? What critical participatory approaches can be employed to create inclusive public spaces that respond to the diverse needs, desires, and aspirations of individuals and communities alike? What are the critical global and comparative perspectives on public space that can enable further scholarly and professional work? And, what are the futures of public space in the face of global pandemics, such as COVID-19? The readers of this volume will be rewarded with an impressive array of perspectives that are bound to expand critical perspectives on public space

Abstract

Being Public is an anthology of essays investigating, from different perspectives, the notion of 'public'. 'Public' is one of the most issued categories in current debates on culture, yet the notion itself remains largely un-reflected. The meaning of both 'art publics' and 'public space' have become complex in a time where boundaries between public and private are shifting, and where 'the public' actually comprises different groups of changing composition and identity. What does it mean to be public today? And what is the role of art in constituting both 'public space' as well as 'a public'? Taking these questions as a starting point, the book aims to create a better understanding of the relationships between art and the notion of the public.

Abstract

As part of the international research and design project StreetWorks: Patterns in Urbanity, professor of Design in Urbanism Henk Hartzema, together with students from the Academy, explored and researched the function of the street in six European cities, each with a population of around 1 million residents: Amsterdam, Brussels, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Porto and Zagreb. They cooperated with architecture study programmes and urban planning services at each location. The cooperation was an initiative of the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE). The participants concentrated on the cohesive function of the city street and on the concept of the layered urban reality of the street by fixing their gaze on traditions and ideological opinions elsewhere in Europe. In addition to the research and design results of the different student teams, the publication includes contributions from Rogier van den Berg, Joan Busquets, Noël van Dooren, Henk Hartzema, Alex Krieger and Ton Schaap.

Abstract

(Bron: website Vlaanderen.be)
