Abstract

As part of Tate Moderns pre-opening programme in 1999, artist Mark Dion and a team of local volunteers combed the shore of the river at Bankside in front of Tate Modern, and at Millbank, opposite Tate Britain. Their aim was to explore Londons rich history through its material remains, the artefacts buried within the mud and gravel of its beaches. A wide variety of objects and fragments were uncovered, ranging from clay pipes, oyster shells and cattle teeth to plastic toys and shoes. The more unusual finds included a bottle containing a letter in Arabic script, pieces of Ballarmine pottery and a fragment of human shinbone. Tents were set up on the lawn outside Tate Britain, where each item was cleaned. A number of professionals including Museum of London staff, Thames River Police and ecologists, helped to identify them. Once collected and processed Mark Dion created an artwork from the objects and artefacts. The finds are presented as an installation, arranged in a mahogany cabinet alongside photographs of the beachcombers and tidal flow charts.

Abstract

Lavishly illustrated volume revealing the intricacies of a 1742 map of the cosmos. The expansive and intricate Atlas Coelestis, created by Johann Doppelmayr in 1742, set out to record everything known about astronomy at the time, covering constellations, planets, moons, comets, and more, all rendered in exquisite detail. Through stunning illustrations, historical notes, and scientific explanations, Phenomena contextualizes Doppelmayr’s atlas and creates a spectacular handbook to the heavens.Phenomena begins by introducing Doppelmayr’s life and work, placing his extraordinary cosmic atlas in the context of discoveries made in the Renaissance and Enlightenment and highlighting the significance of its publication. This oversized book presents thirty beautifully illustrated and richly annotated plates, covering all the fundamentals of astronomy—from the dimensions of the solar system to the phases of the moon and the courses of comets. Each plate is accompanied by expert analysis from astronomer Giles Sparrow, who deftly presents Doppelmayr’s references and cosmological work to a modern audience. Each plate is carefully deconstructed, isolating key stars, planets, orbits, and moons for in-depth exploration. A conclusion reflects on the development of astronomy since the publication of the Atlas and traces the course of the science up to the present day. Following the conclusion is a timeline of key discoveries from ancient times onward along with short biographies of the key players in this history.

Abstract

Jan Dibbets’ dissenting and unashamedly biased ‘History of Another Photography’ offers nothing less than a reinterpretation of the entire history of art photography, arguing that scientific photography was the realm where the medium’s real innovations happened. “It was the scientists,” says Dibbets, “who produced really great stuff. Scientific photography encouraged a freer, more outgoing use of the medium.” Dibbets goes on to draw a line upon which he sets the names of all the photographers he considers as real artists – or at least all the photographs he considers as works of art – from the invention of the medium up to the present day. Jan Dibbets highlights the scientifically oriented photographers of the 19th century who emerge here as the true visionaries, paving the way for entire output of the 20th century: Nicéphore Niépce, Gustave Le Gray, Etienne-Jules Marey and Edward Muybridge. Alongside them are other photographers less well known – but for Dibbets just as crucial – including Wilson A. Bentley and Etienne Léopold Trouvelot. Their direct successors are Karl Blossfeldt, Man Ray, Alexander Rodchenko, Paul Strand and Berenice Abbot – in a line that continues on to Bruce Nauman. Also included is a selection of photographs by contemporary artists – among them Thomas Ruff, James Welling, Wade Guyton and Seth Price.

Abstract

It has often been pointed out that twentieth-century painting and physics share a common tendency toward probing behind appearances into the underlying structure of things; that the 'retreat from likeness' in painting is akin to science's peering far within the surface of matter. The results of their probings are also significantly similar: extra-dimensionality connects Cubism and relativity; and random, indeterminate processes occur both in recent expressionist painting and in quantum physics. But although the common culture implicit in these parallels has often been remarked, not until now has it been studied in depth and in detail. The author provides a concise summary of those aspects of modern science that relate to his theme, including the development of a 'third science' that embraces information, communication, automation, and systems theory. He also provides in parallel a concise history of the modern movement in painting. Treating only those artists whose work clearly illustrates his viewpoint, he divides those active before the Second World War into two broad groups, the Geometricizers (members of such movements as Cubism, Constructivism, and the Bauhaus), who sought to make manifest the essential form of reality; and the Magicians (including Chirico, Kandinsky, the Dadaists, and the Surrealists), who transformed reality in accordance with their own internally developed laws. Postwar reactions, continuations, and new starts, including some very recent trends, are discussed....
