Abstract

Created to accompany an international traveling exhibition, Another Book about Promotion and Sales Material explores the work of one of the world’s most famous graphic designers—Stefan Sagmeister. Divided into four sections, and including commissioned work from ten years of graphic design, this book explores how Sagmeister creates greater awareness for corporations, his friends, his own work, and cultural events and products.Showcasing a wide range of work, from a Talking Heads boxed set, to print ads for Levi’s, to a wedding invitation for close friends, this book includes exclusive images from the studio archive as well as Sagmeister’s commentary on his work, which contains his characteristic wit and insight. The result is a funny, revealing, and intimate look at the cutting-edge work of a graphic design master.

Abstract

The Art of Looking Sideways is a primer in visual intelligence, an exploration of the workings of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination. It is an inexhaustible mine of anecdotes, quotations, images, curious facts and useless information, oddities, serious science, jokes and memories, all concerned with the interplay between the verbal and the visual, and the limitless resources of the human mind. Loosely arranged in 72 chapters, all this material is presented in a wonderfully inventive series of pages that are themselves masterly demonstrations of the expressive use of type, space, colour and imagery. This book does not set out to teach lessons, but it is full of wisdom and insight collected from all over the world. Describing himself as a visual jackdaw, master designer Alan Fletcher has distilled a lifetime of experience and reflection into a brilliantly witty and inimitable exploration of such subjects as perception, colour, pattern, proportion, paradox, illusion, language, alphabets, words, letters, ideas, creativity, culture, style, aesthetics and value. The Art of Looking Sideways is the ultimate guide to visual awareness, a magical compilation that will entertain and inspire all those who enjoy the interplay between word and image, and who relish the odd and the unexpected.

Abstract

At the age of thirty-one, Neville Brody has been described as 'the most influential designer of the Eighties'. His innovations in graphic design have revolutionized the look of magazines, advertisements and packaging. Whether record sleeve or supermarket packaging, the products paraded for our admiration and consumption as often as not borrow ideas that first saw the light of day on a Brody sketch-pad.While the voracious media boom of the Eighties led others to adapt ideas from Brody's original design, few of his imitators have achieved the same resonance. Brody's work follows his belief in design to reveal, not to conceal. It embraces the dynamism directed by human forms - a challenge to today's ever-growing faith in technology. As such, his work is often experimental; part of a tradition that has its roots in the art movements of the early twentieth century, in particular Dadaism and Constructivism.*The Graphic Language of Neville Brody* collects together much of his output over the last decade, including his ground-breaking design and typography for the international style journal, *The Face*. The accompanying text features many direct quotes and observations on design theory and practice. With over 450 illustrations, this book provides a wide-ranging introduction to a crucial period in graphic design. It gives a first-hand account that will appeal to all those interested in the techniques of visual communication in an increasingly visual age.

Abstract

Ever since its foundation in 1990, design studio Visionandfactory has always played a prominent role in the Belgian and international graphic design scene. The studio’s key figure is Hugo Puttaert, designer, professor, editor, publisher and one of the sector’s movers and shakers. Instead of a complete overview, this book offers a selection, a kaleidoscopic view of Visionandfactory’s multifaceted output. The selected work is contextualised with texts by Rick Poynor and Steven Cleeren offering insight into the studio’s history and work processes as well as into Hugo Puttaert’s vision on design as a discipline and the social responsibility of the designer. With a split-fountain cover that changes colour when heated and hundreds of colour pages, this book provides a striking illustration of the credo that is so central to his vision, ‘Think in Colour’.

Abstract

"Arab graphic design emerged in the early twentieth century out of a need to influence, and give expression to, the far-reaching economic, social, and political changes that were taking place in the Arab world at the time. But graphic design as a formally recognized genre of visual art only came into its own in the region in the twenty-first century and, to date, there has been no published study on the subject to speak of. A History of Arab Graphic Design traces the people and events that were integral to the shaping of a field of graphic design in the Arab world. Examining the work of over eighty key designers from Morocco to Iraq, and covering the period from pre-1900 to the end of the twentieth century, Bahia Shehab and Haytham Nawar chart the development of design in the region, beginning with Islamic art and Arabic calligraphy, and their impact on Arab visual culture, through to the digital revolution and the arrival of the Internet. They look at how cinema, economic prosperity, and political and cultural events gave birth to and shaped the founders of Arab graphic design. Highlighting the work of key designers and stunningly illustrated with 360 colour images, A History of Arab Graphic Design is an invaluable resource tool for graphic designers, one which, it is hoped, will place Arab visual culture and design on the map of a thriving international design discourse"--

Abstract

This beautiful, in-depth reference book by illustration professor Martin Salisbury explores drawing for illustration. Salisbury places a special emphasis on drawing, treating it as a fundamental skill that every illustrator should engage with. Assisting students through exercises and case studies, this guide explores the often-unseen world of draftsmanship that underpins finished illustration work. From book illustration to graphic novels and caricatures to commercial design, this attractive volume draws on sketchbooks, projects, and historical examples to show how they started as drawings from observation and drawings from imagination.Salisbury starts out by explaining the fundamentals of this exciting discipline before outlining the basic principles of line, tone, composition, and color through inspired examples. Different approaches to drawing, including anecdotal, sequential, and reportage, are examined to help students acquire their own personal visual language. Interviews with illustrators also provide valuable insights into the creative process, as they discuss the challenges, rewards, and what drawing personally means for them.Visually appealing, Drawing for Illustration features detailed analysis of works by key illustrators from the past and present, including George Cruikshank, Ronald Searle, Sheila Robinson, Laura Carlin, Alexis Deacon, and Isabelle Arsenault, looking at the differing roles drawing plays in their particular illustrative languages and how styles have changed over time.

Abstract

Weet iemand raad?
