Who owns the past? Are museum archives and their re-collections of cultural heritage a cult of the dead-and if so, are we living in a necropolis? This book on photography, cemeteries, and the archive evolved out of an experimental research project at the Bibliotheca Hertzianain Rome, with its immense collection of canonic photographs from the history of art and architecture. An artist's book, it takes on the form of a description of an unfinished film in five acts-a cinematic fragment, so to speak: Dopostoria. The title essay by Christoph Keller is complemented by two contributions on burial cultures in prehistory and in modernity from the archaeologist Maria Clara Martinelli and the modern historian Carolin Kosuch. A sequence of collages at the back of the book conjures up a phantasmagorical journey through an ancient-modern Rome.

Joachim Schmid’s artistic preoccupations reflect a close observation of photographic history and a fascination with photographic images themselves in all their alternately bizarre and conventionalized aspects. He has amassed a vast collection of vernacular images which form the raw material for many of the works included in this extensive monograph. As Joan Fontcuberta has written, Schmid’s work: ‘has its origins in the idea that excess, waste and rubbish are paradigmatic effects of late capitalism. His projects espouse a kind of photographic ecology, but they are also concerned with the values of the creative experience itself: accumulation, chance, authorship, quality and originality.’ Featuring texts by Stephen Bull, Frits Giertsberg, Joan Fontcuberta, Jan-Erik Lundstrom, Val Williams and John S Weber.

Performer, photographer, and painter Teun Hocks is "an innocent Everyman in an always strange and often funny world," as Janet Koplos recently noted. In scenes burlesque to tragicomic, his lonely Buster Keaton-like persona struggles to find stable ground in an unstable universe. Life's complications take the form of impossible Rube Goldbergian contraptions fraught with psychological implications. Each image captures one moment of an implied narrative, triggering questions about how the protagonist ever got himself into such a fix and what in the world will happen next. The wit, elaborate technique, and rich colors of his images combine to form an irrepressibly original oeuvre. In addition to his painted photographs, the book includes drawings, Polaroids, and studio shots, which illuminate his creative process. This is the first English-language volume devoted to the artist. "Hocks is the master of the short story compressed into a single image."—Janet Koplos. Teun Hocks was made possible with generous support from The Netherland-America Foundation and the Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam.

The women of Weimar Germany had an uneasy alliance with modernity: while they experienced cultural liberation after World War I, these "New Women" still faced restrictions in their earning power, political participation, and reproductive freedom. Images of women in newspapers, films, magazines, and fine art of the 1920s reflected their ambiguous social role, for the women who were pictured working in factories, wearing androgynous fashions, or enjoying urban nightlife seemed to be at once empowered and ornamental, both consumers and products of the new culture. In this book Maud Lavin investigates the multi-layered social construction of femininity in the mass culture of Weimar Germany, focusing on the intriguing photomontages of the avant-garde artist Hannah Höch. Höch, a member of the Berlin Dada group, was recognized as one of the most innovative practitioners of photomontage. In such works as Dada-Ernst and Cut with the Kitchen Knife, she reconstructed the wonderfully seductive mass media images of the New Woman with their appeal intact but with their contours fractured in order to expose the contradictions of the new female stereotypes. Her photomontages exhibit a disturbing tension between pleasure and anger, confidence and anxiety. In Weimar—as today—says Lavin, the representation of women in the mass media took on a political meaning when it challenged the distribution of power in society. Höch's work provides important evidence of the necessity for women to shape the production and reception of the images that redefine their role.
