The visionary and supremely self-fashioning artist Frida Kahlo drew inspiration throughout her career from arte popular—painted ceramics, embroidered textiles, religious votives, effigies and children's toys, and other objects created in Mexico’s rural and Indigenous communities. The hundreds of folk art objects that filled her home and studio attest to her nationalist politics and fascination with the work of carvers, weavers, sculptors of papier-mâché, and vernacular painters. She depicted these objects in her paintings and adopted elements of traditional dress and ornament in her own self-presentation, playing on modernist fascination with folk culture and on her own relation to layered Mexican identity. Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) et Bernard Leach (1887-1979) comptent parmi les potiers les plus connus de ce siècle et leur influence sur l'artisanat de leurs pays et du monde n'est plus à démontrer.Ce livre est né d'un dialogue à bâtons rompus entre les deux maîtres potiers et donne au lecteur l'occasion de rencontrer l'homme et l'artiste Hamada, de connaître sa vie, ses idées, ses techniques. Car bien que l'oeuvre de Hamada jouisse d'une renommée mondiale, l'homme est resté à l'abri de la curiosité du public. L'ouvrage de Leach, ami de Hamada de longue date, se base sur des entretiens enregistrés en 1973, sur des travaux publiés par Hamada lui-même et sur de nombreuses lettres et témoignages, pour brosser un portait fascinant du maître japonais. Ce livre, richement illustré des meilleurs travaux de Hamada, dépasse de loin le cadre d'une biographie ou d'une description technique ; il s'agit bien plus d'un hommage à la créativité d'un potier qui a montré le chemin au monde de l'artisanat de son pays et qui a grandement contribué à éveiller l'intérêt pour la poterie japonaise dans le modne occidental.
