"This is a fascinating edited volume that uniquely draws on the expertise of Mexican academics and grassroots activists to explore the positive and negative effects of institutional reforms to promote gender equality in Mexico." - Leslie Schwindt-Bayer, Professor, Rice University, Houston, US "Political Representation and Gender Equality in Mexico does what no other collection has done. By bringing not only academic voices to a discussion of women's political representation in Mexico, but also the invaluable insight of practitioners and grassroots activists, this volume provides a holistic understanding of Mexico's journey to gender equality." - Magda Hinojosa, Professor, Arizona State University, Tempe, US "This timely and important collection brings together Mexico's leading scholars and activists working on gender and politics. Vidal-Correa's excellent and well-edited volume is required reading for everyone interested in Latin American politics." - Jennifer M. Piscopo, Associate Professor, Occidental College, Los Angeles, US The field of gender and politics has continuously grown, becoming more interdisciplinary and engaging with issues, context and people from all around the world. Because of this, new emerging approaches and studies challenge embedded notions, ideas and preconceptions of how the world is meant to be studied and understood. This is particularly true for studies on women and their engagement in political affairs. How should institutions conceptualize women in order to advance rules and mechanisms that favor women? What roles do representatives have on the making of gender equality? When women are legislating, which are the consequences of the approved legislation? Fernanda Vidal-Correa is Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Universidad Panamericana, Campus Mexico. She is currently Dean for Research in the School of Communication.

This book examines how women journalists in Malaysia negotiated male power structures, in particular structures determined by the keystone party of the ruling coalition, the United Malays National Organisation. Through both oral histories and content analysis, it looks at how women journalists in the women's pages of the newspapers found spaces to advocate for their readers. It is thus the first work to look at the importance of the women's pages in the Malay-language newspapers, and how apparently monolithic institutions of the authoritarian state hid diverse contests for resources and prestige.

" The public intellectual, as a person and ideal, has a long and storied mythology. Writing in venues like the New Republic and Foreign Affairs, they are expected to opine on a broad array of topics, from foreign policy to literature to economics. Yet in recent years a new kind of thinker has supplanted that archetype: the thought leader. Equipped with one big idea, thought leaders focus their energies on TED talks more than highbrow periodicals. How did this shift happen? In The Ideas Industry, Daniel W. Drezner points to the roles of political polarization, heightened inequality, and eroding trust in authority as ushering in the change. In contrast to public intellectuals, thought leaders gain fame as single-idea merchants. Their ideas are often laudable and highly ambitious: ending global poverty by 2025, for example. But instead of a class composed of university professors and freelance intellectuals debating in highbrow magazines, thought leaders can bypass traditional gatekeepers to directly influence policymakers and the public. They are more immune to criticism--and in this century, the criticism of public intellectuals also counts for less. Three factors have reshaped the world of ideas: waning trust in expertise, increasing political polarization and rising levels of plutocracy. The erosion of trust has lowered the barriers to entry in the marketplace of ideas. Thought leaders don't need doctorates or fellowships to advance their arguments. Polarization is hardly a new phenomenon, but in contrast to their predecessors, today's intellectuals are more likely to enjoy the support of ideologically friendly private funders and be housed in ideologically-driven think tanks. Increasing inequality is a key driver: more than ever before, contemporary plutocrats fund intellectuals and policy shops that generate arguments that align with their own. There are downsides to the contemporary ideas industry, but Drezner argues that it is very good at broadcasting ideas widely and reaching large audiences of people hungry for new thinking. Both fair-minded and trenchant, The Ideas Industry will reshape our understanding of contemporary public intellectual life in America and the West."-- "Daniel W. Drezner's The Ideas Industry traces the trajectory of the public intellectual from the early 20th century to its present form of the "thought leader." It will reshape our understanding of contemporary public intellectual life in America and the West"--

This book explores the politics of organized Muslim women in Turkey and analyzes their coalitions with other-secular feminist, Kurdish, etc.-women's movements from an intersectional perspective. It provides empirical evidence for significant changes in Muslim women's politics under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and points to the increasing difficulty to build cross-movement women's coalitions in the face of rising religious conservatism and authoritarianism under the AKP rule. While feminist Muslim women who display an intersectional understanding of structural inequality and oppression are found to be more resilient in the face of political pressure, conservative Muslim women dodge women's coalitions and align with the government's discourses and policies. Empirical evidence based on interviews with organized Muslim women also shows that prospects for coalition building largely depends on the specific societal and institutional (re-)configurations of patriarchy along with other relations of domination rather than mere ideological "difference" among women. This book will be of interest to scholars and students across Gender Studies, Sociology, and Political Science, particularly those whose research focuses on intersectionality and social movements. Ayşe Dursun is a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna, Austria. She does research on gender and politics, intersectionality, gender equality policies, social reproduction and care, social and women's movements, and migration. She has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals including German Politics and Society, Historical Social Research, and Journal of Gender Studies. Ayşe Dursun is currently a steering committee member of the European Consortium for Political Research's (ECPR) standing group on Gender and Politics.

"This book represents a valuable contribution to the history of the Socialist Second International and, more generally, of European socialism between the Great Depression of the 1880s and WWI. It comes to fill a gap in the scholarship, insofar as it investigates the history of the Socialist Youth International. During the first phase of the making of socialist parties, this organization was in charge of the political and cultural education of the proletarian youth. Capitalizing on an approach based on social, quantitative and political history, and on an analysis of mentalities and languages, the book reconstructs the many-sidedness of the “school of recruits” of the social-democratic and revolutionary movements. The working conditions of youth in Europe, its unionization and economic struggles, the fight against militarism, the pedagogical work, the internationalism and the commitment to maintain peace, and the attitude of young militants towards Bolshevik revolution are some of the themes investigated in the book. It also clarifies the role and the engagement with the issue of the new generation shown by prominent figures of Marxism such as Karl Liebknecht, Jean Jaurès, Henri De Man, Willi Münzenberg, Henriette Roland Holst, and Robert Danneberg. Finally, the book constitutes also a page of European social and political history, reconstructed through the history of the various youth socialisms and their relationship with the Marxist tradition."--Provided by publisher. “Patrizia Dogliani’s new history of the International Union of Socialist Youth draws fresh air into the often claustrophobic spaces of the history of socialism.” —Glenda Sluga, Professor of International History,European University Institute, Florence, Italy “With this new book, Patrizia Dogliani once again demonstrates why she is one of the preeminent scholars of modern international and transnational history…It is an impressive achievement.” —Talbot Charles Imlay, Professor, University of Laval, Quebec, Canada “Long recognized as a pioneering historian of youth, Patrizia Dogliani offers a rich transnational panorama of socialist youth. With an impressive command of sources, Dogliani provides an essential guide to political activism among youth across class, gender, and nationality.” —Mary Gibson, Professor of History, City University of New York, USA.

"The daughter of one of Britain's longest-serving prime ministers, Mary Gladstone was a notable musician, hostess of one of the most influential political salons in late Victorian London, and probably the first female prime ministerial private secretary in Britain. Pivoting around Mary's initiatives, this intellectual history draws on a trove of unpublished archival material that reveals for the first time the role of music in Victorian liberalism, explores its intersections with literature, recovers what the high Victorian salon was within a wider cultural history, and shows Mary's influence on her father's work. Paying close attention to literary and biographical details, the book also sheds new light on Tennyson's poetry, George Eliot's fiction, the founding of the Royal College of Music, the Gladstone family, and a broad plane of wider British culture, including political liberalism and women, sociability, social theology and aesthetic democracy"--

This book aims to expand what scholars know and who is included in this discussion about black studies, which aids in the democratization of American higher education and the deconstruction of traditional disciplines of high education, to facilitate a sense of social justice. By challenging traditional disciplines, black studies reveals not only the political role of American universities but also the political aspects of the disciplines that constitute their core. While black studies is post-modern in its deconstruction of positivism and universalism, it does not support a radical rejection of all attempts to determine truth. Evolving from a form of black cultural nationalism, it challenges the perceived white cultural nationalist norm and has become a critical multiculturalism that is more global and less gendered. Henry argues for the inclusion of black studies beyond the curriculum of colleges and universities.
