This major new reference work provides a comprehensive overview of linguistic phenomena in Mandarin and other dialects in a global context, highlighting the dynamic interaction between those languages and English. Through state-of-the-art accounts of various sub-fields such as applied linguistics, machine translation, English subtitling as cross-cultural mediation, technology in Chinese language teaching and global business communication, this Handbook offers a significant contribution to the field of Chinese language and linguistics. Examining fast-growing linguistic research areas on Chinese languages, ranging from research on language contact, Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics, Pragmatics, Forensic Linguistics, to Sinitic Kinship studies, it focuses on language contact situations inside and outside China, including the Cantonese and Hokkien diaspora, and Sinitic languages notably along the Belt and Road. Exploring how key Chinese concepts were coined at the beginning of the 20th century through interaction with European languages and how they have evolved, it also includes topics on the search for a universal language in the Chinese language context. Addressing core issues within Chinese language and culture and focusing on the sites and forms of interaction between Chinese and English, this Handbook encompasses a rich overview of the field, offering a global and interdisciplinary tool for students and researchers across the field of Chinese language and linguistics.

This book presents a longitudinal research which coversa linguistic approach to understand and observelanguage learner agency. It makes connections between agency in discourse analyses and agency in applied linguistics by examining how learner agency is manifested in autobiographic oral narratives and influenced by contextual factors. This book also demonstrates that agency is not a fixed entity that English learners possess, but a dynamic construct constantly negotiated by the learners with the social world. It is the result of their identity positioning and repositioning within a complex and ever-changing context. Learner identities, either actual or imagined, are significantly correlated with their investment in English and their English learning process. This book sheds new light on teaching English as a foreign language and gives inspirations for enhancing English learners' agency in contemporary context of China. As learner agency should be treated in a dynamic and process view, a low level of agency manifested in a particular period or in a certain context may not necessarily persist in later periods or extend to other contexts. Provided with supportive contextual conditions and taking on positive and powerful identities, language learners are well on the course for higher levels of agency.

This book adopts a cross-sectional approach and mainly focuses on one of the core pragmatic constructs, formulaic/pragmatic routines, in addition to components put forward by Roever (2011) and Taguchi (2013). It actively integrates multidimensional pragmatic modalities—including both production (initiating and responding) and reception (recognition, comprehension, and perception), together with learners’ cognitive processes—rather than one or two types of task modalities. Focusing more on the Chinese EFL context instead of Japanese or European L1 learners, it also takes advantage of an emerging instrument, the computer-animated elicitation task, for data collection based on authentic oral responses and to avoid “coached” responses. The socio-cognitive approach, proposed by the famous linguistic expert Prof. Istvan Kecskes, is subsequently applied to conduct an in-depth analysis of the data. Hence, the book introduces a new and fruitful theoretical perspective to the traditional L2 pragmatic research field. .

This book aims to expand the theoretical framework of and counter the Eurocentric narratives in language policy research, by comparing policies of EU and India and demonstrating the importance of taking a comparative perspective while studying language policies. This book challenges the notion of macro-level power in language policy research and offers evidence that, in democratic frameworks, macro-level power is not absolute. It is not uniform across policy domains, but rather susceptible to pressure, especially in the domains of healthcare and social welfare. This book makes three important contributions to the theory of language policy by: Arguing for the need to reconceptualise macro-level power Proposing ‘Categories of Differentiation’ as a new analytical tool for policy research Demonstrating that socio-political changes are reflected at the textual level This book is of interest to researchers working on language policies and those investigating language related legislation across different policy domains, to practitioners and policymakers in language policy, as well as to graduate students conducting comparative policy research. “This is a much valued and timely book making a strong case for the subject of language policy across Europe and India. The large comparative case studies of four distinctive states across Europe and India in a simple descriptive mode makes the reading of this book enjoyable. The domains of administration, legislation, healthcare and social welfare are undoubtedly novel ways to deal within the concept of language policy in a wider sense. The author uses discourse analysis to bring out the relationship between intention, explanation and interpretation of a phenomenon like language policy and its implementation. The social diversity as expressed in linguistic mapping is well captured in the novel idea of “categories of differentiation” both as a normative methodological tool and its historical-empirical manifestation.” — Asha Sarangi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
