Gender studies are a key lens through which education has been examined in the past forty years, having become an accepted and popular subfield in educational foundations studies. Moreover, scholars in gender and education have made tremendous contributions well beyond education, influencing humanities and social sciences scholars across the academy. Hearing the stories of these scholars—their development, education, important works, and thoughts on the future—offers unique insights into the genesis and growth of the field and gives new scholars an overview of advances made. Leaders in Gender and Education: Intellectual Self-Portrais does just that, showing the history of gender and education through the eyes of 16 of its leaders. By recounting their experiences and scholarly work, they trace the development of feminist and profeminist research on girls, on boys, and on the issues shaping both gender and education—issues like race, sexuality, neoliberalism, globalization, and more. Importantly, the volume has a global focus, including scholars from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This diversity gives readers a broad sense of the progress of gender scholarship in education around the world. Each essay provides students and researchers alike with not only background on the 16 scholars included, but also the lists of major works—chosen by contributors themselves—direct readers to some of the most important scholarship on gender and education. Taken together, further, the contributors’ thoughts on the future of the field provide glimpses of productive directions for studies of gender and education.

The ten empirical chapters in this edited collection contribute to an understanding of masculinities through the lens of disability, and disability through the lens of masculinities. An original and well-researched study, this book takes seriously the multiple points of intersection in the making of disabled masculinities, and will be of particularly interest to scholars of disability, gender and sexualities, cultural studies and pedagogy.

"This book brings together a comprehensive and diverse range of perspectives and experiences of strategies and approaches that will be of value to anyone who works in delivery, leadership or support of diversity and inclusion in higher education. Its authentic voice, combined with a rich range of methodologies and personal insights helps the authors to bring complex concepts to life in a manner which is honest, thoughtful and challenging." —Professor Sarah Sharples, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, University of Nottingham, UK "Crimmins’ excellent collection is a treasure trove of irrefutable statistical facts and figures that blows away the myth that diversity and inclusion policies have closed the equalities gap in higher education. Powerful fuel for policy makers and social justice educators passionate about creating a truly global academy where all can flourish regardless of race, gender, class, sexuality, and (dis)ability." —Professor Heidi Safia Mirza, Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK This book explores tried and tested strategies that support student and faculty engagement and inclusion in the academy. These strategies are anchored by a brief exploration of the history and effect/s of exclusion and deprivilege in higher education. However, while many publications exploring academic inequality focus on the causes and impacts of structural, psychological and cultural exclusion based on racism, sexism, classism and ableism, they rarely engage in interventions to expose and combat such de/privilege. Capturing examples of inclusive practices that are as diverse as student and faculty populations, these strategies can be easily translated and employed by organisations, collectives and individuals to recognise and combat social and academic exclusion within higher education environments. Gail Crimmins is Senior Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Her research interests include gender inequity and the student experience in the academy and uses of feminist approaches to research. .
