Abstract

Rethinking Genre in Contemporary Global Cinema offers a unique, wide-ranging exploration of the intersection between traditional modes of film production and new, transitional/transnational approaches to film genre and related discourses in a contemporary, global context. This volume’s content—the films, genres, and movements explored, as well as methodologies used in their analysis—is diverse and, crucially, up-to-date with contemporary film-making practice and theory. Significantly, the collection extends existing scholarly discourse on film genre beyond its historical bias towards a predominant focus on Hollywood cinema, on the one hand, and a tendency to treat “other” national cinemas in isolation and/or as distinct systems of production, on the other. In view of the ever-increasing globalisation and transnational mediation of film texts and screen media and culture worldwide, the book recognises the need for film genre studies and film genre criticism to cast a broader, indeed global, scope. The collection thus rethinks genre cinema as a transitional, cross-cultural, and increasingly transnational, global paradigm of film-making in diverse contexts.

Abstract

This book argues that the sustained interpretation of individual movies has, contrary to conventional wisdom, never been a major preoccupation of film studies—that, indeed, the field is marked by a dearth of effective, engaging, and enlightening critical analyses of single films. The book makes this case by surveying what has been written about four historically important and well-known movies (D. W. Griffith’s Way Down East, Marcel Carné’s Port of Shadows, Mike Nichols’s The Graduate, and Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert), none of which has been the focus of sustained critical attention, and by exhaustively examining the kinds of work published in four influential film journals (Cinema Journal, Screen, Wide Angle, and Movie). The book goes on to argue for the value of the work of interpretation, illustrating this value through extended analyses of Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Christopher Nolan’s Memento, both of which thematize interpretation. Novak demonstrates the causes and consequences of reading poorly and the importance of reading well. .

Abstract

This book offers a new way of thinking about film endings. Whereas existing works on the subject concentrate on narrative resolution, this book explores the way film endings blend together a complex of motifs, tropes and other elements to create the sense of an ending—that is, it looks at ‘endings as endings’. Drawing on a wide range of examples taken from films of different periods and national cinemas, the author identifies three key features which structure the work: thresholds and boundaries, water, and, above all, the beach. The beach combines water and a boundary and is the most resonant of the key sites to which film endings gravitate. Although beach endings go back to at least 1910, they have increased markedly in post-classical cinema, and can be found across all genres and in films from many different countries. As the leading example of the book’s argument, they illustrate both the aesthetic richness and the structural complexity of film endings. .

Abstract

"In this incisive and timely survey, Stephen Marcus Finn surveys a broad range of films about farmed animals with a keen ethical focus on how they serve to help or harm the lives of those who are caught up in the industries of carnivory. Finn breaks new ground in his demonstration of how ubiquitously our habits and values are shaped by a provocative canon of feature, documentary, and animated films ranging from Okja to Babe, Chicken Run to Fowl Play, The Cove to Death on a Factory Farm. Reading Farmed Animals on Film: A Manifesto for a New Ethic is like attending a keenly curated film festival, and readers will want to follow up by actually watching all these films and thinking about them through Finn's lens." -Randy Malamud, Regents' Professor of English, Georgia State University, author of Reading Zoos: Representations of Animals and Captivity "Stephen Marcus Finn's book is a comprehensive, insightful, and thorough analysis of over 30 films, and the power of cinema to tell stories. Besides thorough analyses of the films-as-text, Finn offers what much research and publishing does not: action steps. Once our consciousness is raised, what can we do? We are told in a well-written, accessible and interesting book that should be required reading for anyone who cares about animals." -Debra Merskin, Professor Emerita, School of Journalism and Communication, University of Oregon This book aims to show how film can increase awareness of the plight of farmed animals without exploiting them. Much has been written on the rights of animals, be they in the wild or circuses, hunted, experimented on, used for entertainment, or slaughtered and consumed. However, there has been little that has examined in any detail the filming of farmed animals, and nothing on a declaration of rights for such animals, thus leaving them in a limbo of neglect. Stephen Marcus Finn offers a manifesto on how to foster the rights of farmed animals in filming sets out to rectify this lacuna. Stephen Marcus Finn is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Pretoria. He is an animal rights activist, a novelist, and playwright whose writing concentrates on social outsiders and the oppressed.
