Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive search for the basic political drivers of international development cooperation, based on the policy and performance of the OECD countries from the early 1960s to the present. The author focuses on the stated and implemented policies of the four so-called frontrunners and the Western hegemon, scrutinizing the changing trends in the justifications, objectives and guidelines set for the policy and their evolving performance vis-à-vis the international ODA target. Through extensive research, the work examines predominant world-views, societal value systems and foreign policy traditions, in order to find the policy drivers that vary nation to nation and how development assistance has evolved globally. Olav Stokke is Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, Norway. He is the author of The UN and Development (2009).

Abstract

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of organizational ethical climate on the organizational commitment and job performance of Japanese-funded manufacturing enterprises (JFMEs) in China using empirical analysis and discussion, and includes a review of related research into economic ethics as well as a quantitative analysis of the various types of organizational ethical climates typically found in JFMEs operating in China. While prior studies have approached the topic from an ethical, psychological, philosophical and/or sociological perspective, none have specifically analyzed organizational ethical climate and its effect on organizational commitment and job performance under these conditions. Nor has an analysis of the relationship between organizational ethical climate, organizational commitment, and job performance ever been approached from the perspective of economic ethics. This study illustrates the feasibility of researching organizational ethics from an economic perspective, while laying out a theoretical basis for exploring the philosophy of economics from the perspective of economic ethics.

Abstract

This book offers an original analysis of the long-term impact of western and Chinese economic and development cooperation policies in Africa. It argues that western Official Development Assistance (ODA) has failed to create viable and autonomous economies in beneficiary countries not (only) because of corruption, inefficiencies and cultural differences, but because it was never meant to do so. Raudino demonstrates, rather, that it was always designed to provide relief measures and nurture political relations rather than create genuinely industrialized and self-reliant economies. Similarly, by analyzing the nature of Chinese economic investments in Africa the author shows that China’s governmental policies hardly represent a revolutionary departure from the cooperation standards set by the West. In making these observations he also taps into the broader question of why wealth continues to be generated unequally across the world. Based on extensive fieldwork, quantitative economic analysis and historical qualitative research, this thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of politics, economics and development studies, as well as to those involved more directly in the aid process. Endorsements: ‘Simone Raudino makes a compelling and thought-provoking case against traditional wisdoms on the differences between Western and Chinese approaches to Africa. I have no doubt this book will be recognized as a game-changer.’ - Tembi Tambo, South African Ambassador to Italy ‘Development Aid and Sustainable Economic Growth in Africa represents an original piece of the development economic literature resulting from over a dozen years of work in the field, vast historical research and intimate knowledge of Official Development Assistance policies.’ – Patrick Simonnet, EU Ambassador to Iraq.

Abstract

In this book, Kevin Duss tackles the well-known problem in the teaching structure of today’s universities that despite the immense potential of formative feedback towards students is not or only insufficiently applied. The author uses existing research and modern technologies to develop a web-based feedback application that enhances both objective and perceived student performance. This work makes a first step towards a design theory for formative feedback applications and gives guidance for their successful implementation. Contents Self-Assessment and Computer-based Assessment Social Comparison Theory Design of Computer-based Feedback Action Design Research Method Target Groups Lecturers and students of education, information technology and psychology Specialists in the field of education and lecturers of large-scale lectures in higher education The Author Kevin Duss completed his Bachelor of Science in Business IT at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and his Master of Arts in Business Innovation at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland. Abstract

During the past five decades, sub-Saharan Africa has received more foreign aid than has any other region of the world, and yet poverty remains endemic throughout the region. As Kenneth Kalu argues, this does not mean that foreign aid has failed; rather, it means that foreign aid in its current form does not have the capacity to procure development or eradicate poverty. This is because since colonialism, the average African state has remained an instrument of exploitation, and economic and political institutions continue to block a majority of citizens from meaningful participation in the economy. Drawing upon case studies of Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria, this book makes the case for redesigning development assistance in order to strike at the root of poverty and transform the African state and its institutions into agents of development.

Abstract

This book provides the solid and detailed evidence for some debated theories in Chinese studies, based on quantitative-qualitative analysis or mixed methods, which is quite novel compared with the extant work through qualitative or quantitative research alone. In addition, the country's latest particular political phenomena, such as anti-corruption campaigns in the Xi Jinping era or career satisfaction of graduate village officials, have been carefully studied. What’s more, the current situation of political development and participation in the Internet era is fully discussed from a comparative historical perspective. Such examples as the cybereconomy of Chinese rural areas together with the regional differentiation of voting behaviors between rural and urban areas are the focus of investigation. Meanwhile, the legitimacy and characteristics of China’s governance, and government reforms along with the adaptability of foreign theories are also illustrated in this book.

Abstract

This Palgrave Pivot aims to build a bridge between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable finance in financial markets. It investigates classic CSR topics in the light of a modern conception of sustainability. The first part emphasizes four relevant topics in the CSR panorama of financial institutions: banks remuneration practices; human capital disclosure; the impact of environmental performance on banks, and finally, the institutional investors’ attitude towards socially responsible investments (SRIs). The second part explores CSR practices within the financial markets and discusses risk-return profiles of SRI and non-SRI indexes in different time frames. It investigates whether thematic social responsible funds obtain different risk-return than traditional funds, and finally, assesses whether equity crowdfunding could foster social innovation. This book is aimed at scholars and students who are interested in social impact investing and practitioners involved in the social impact market.
