Le juge a, de longue date, été investi de pouvoirs considérables : il suffit de se rappeler qu'il peut enlever un enfant à sa famille, priver un individu de sa liberté ou de son honneur,... pour ne citer que deux exemples, parmi tant d'autres. Aujourd'hui, un phénomène nouveau est apparu. Il est banal de le souligner : depuis ces quelque vingt-cinq dernières années, la justice exerce sur la vie tant publique que privée des citoyens, une emprise grandissante. Ce sont les différents aspects de cette montée en puissance du juge que l'Institut d'études sur la justice avait assignés à ce colloque.
