Secoué par des crises de plus en plus profondes et inscrites dans sa logique même, le capitalisme ne cesse de nous surprendre à la fois par son absurdité et par sa capacité à perdurer. Comment expliquer la persistance de l'aliénation dans nos sociétés, si ce n'est par une « fixation » collective sur une logique destructrice ? Et comment y remédier ? Prolongeant les analyses existentielles amorcées dans sa « Critique de l'existence capitaliste », Christian Arnsperger répond ici à l'une des questions les plus difficiles de notre époque : pourquoi sommes-nous de plus en plus nombreux à ressentir qu'un avenir post-capitaliste est une perspective à la fois nécessaire et inquiétante ? Au point que nos dirigeants politiques, cooptés dans ce qu'il faut bien appeler une pseudo-démocratie capitaliste, ne parviennent à utiliser les rouages de l'État providence que pour renforcer, encore et encore, l'emprise de ce système sur nos corps, nos âmes et nos esprits. La réponse, nous dit l'auteur, se situera dans un véritable sursaut citoyen. Nous avons besoin de « militants existentiels » capables de s'arracher spirituellement à une logique économique qui a cessé de tenir ses promesses. Cette nouvelle forme d'action politique est à notre portée à tous, si nous acceptons de remettre en cause les évidences éculées du capitalisme et de questionner les existences que nous menons en son sein. S'orienter d'après de nouveaux principes de vie ; repenser profondément la social-démocratie et inaugurer une vision « communaliste » de l'économie ; créer de nouvelles « communautés existentielles critiques », tout en promouvant une éthique de la simplicité volontaire, de la redistribution radicalement égalitaire et de la démocratisation profonde telle est la visée de ce livre constructif et optimiste qui, tout en développant une vision tout à fait originale, s'inscrit dans la grande tradition de la critique sociale existentielle, aux côtés de penseurs comme E. F. Schumacher, Ivan Illich et André Gorz.

As long as businesses are set up to focus exclusively on maximizing financial income for the few, our economy will be locked into endless growth and widening inequality. But now people are experimenting with new forms of ownership, which Marjorie Kelly calls generative: aimed at creating the conditions for life for many generations to come. These designs may hold the key to the deep transformation our civilization needs.
