Sociological Methodology (SM) is the only American Sociological Association periodical publication devoted entirely to research methods. It is a compendium of new and sometimes controversial advances in social science methodology. Contributions come from diverse areas and have something new and useful--and sometimes surprising--to say about a wide range of methodological topics. SM seeks qualitative and quantitative contributions that address the full range of methodological problems confronted by empirical research in the social sciences, including conceptualization, data analysis, data collection, measurement, modeling, and research design. The journal provides a forum for engaging the philosophical issues that underpin sociological research. Papers published in SM are original methodological contributions, including new methodological developments, reviews or illustrations of recent developments that provide new methodological insights, and critical evaluative discussions of research practices and traditions. SM encourages the inclusion of applications to real-world sociological data. SM is published annually as an edited, hardbound book.

L'unité d'un recours à l'analogie n'a jamais cessé d'être contestée dans les disciplines les plus diverses : sociologie, économie, histoire, linguistique, philosophie, etc. En essayant, en effet, de dégager un principe d'unité à travers la variété des phénomènes sociaux, l'analogie apparaît, aux yeux de l'orthodoxie scientifique, comme un parti pris d'impertinence par les rapprochements parfois insolites qu'elle provoque. On lui reproche, au surplus, un caractère trop littéraire : elle ne susciterait qu'un monde d'image où les jeux de mots tiennent lieu de démonstrations. Et pourtant la démarche analogique peut se révéler comme l'une des plus fécondes dans les sciences humains. C'est précisément ce que voudrait souligner cet ouvrage qui vise, en quelque sorte, à poser les principes du bon usage de l'analogie. Dans une première partie, il analyse d'une façon générale les diverses formes de cette figure aux niveaux du discours, de la méthode et de la théorie. Cette triple distinction permet d'abord de préciser les limites dans lesquelles se justifie son emploi. Ensuite de critiquer l'usage abusif quen font bon nombre de spécialistes en sciences humaines - et notamment de sociologues - qui glissent subrepticement d'un point de vue à un autre. Dans la deuxième partie, l'ouvrage s'attache à des recherches plus particulières, afin d'apprécier la manière selon laquelle des auteurs comme Panofsky, Goldmann et Weber s'y prennent pour exploiter systématiquement l'analogie, à partir d'une reconstitution minutieuse de leurs démarches fondamentales. Quiconque entreprend des travaux en sciences humaines est amené, d'une façon ou d'une autre, à tirer parti des ressemblances dans l'explication de la réalité sociale. Aussi cet ouvrage constitue-t-il pour lui un précieux auxiliaire qui l'aidera, notamment, à éviter les pièges que ce cheminement camoufle.
