Die Glanzzeit des Klosters Cluny vom frühen 10. bis in die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts war untrennbar verbunden mit den Namen der ersten neun Äbte. Dass sie nicht alle eine Biographie erhalten haben, ist auf den ersten Blick nicht verständlich. Eine Erklärung geben die Viten selbst. Strenger als im römischen Liber pontificalis oder in der Abtsreihe des Klosters Fulda, wo jeder Amtsträger aufgrund seines Amtes einer Lebensbeschreibung für würdig befunden wurde, galt in Cluny das Kriterium der Heiligkeit. Schon zu Lebzeiten wurden die fünf Äbte Odo, Maiolus, Odilo, Hugo und Petrus Venerabilis wegen ihrer Vorbildlichkeit verehrt, alle Biographien sind unter diesem Vorzeichen verfasst. Gleichermaßen durchzieht alle ein gemeinsames Thema: die Regel Benedikts. Als Grundlage der Gemeinschaft von Abt und Konvent prägte sie diese, hielt sie zusammen und gab ihr Orientierung. Der Abt stand so den Mönchen als „die lebendige Norm für den monastischen Alltag“ (K. S. Frank) vor Augen. Dieser Band enthält die erste deutsche Gesamtübersetzung der fünf berühmten und auch kunstgeschichtlich folgenreichen Biographien.

Ces Études clunisiennes regroupent sept articles relevant largement de ce que Georges Duby appelait l'histoire des systèmes de valeur. Par de multiples approches complémentaires, aussi diverses que le sont les sources clunisiennes elle mêmes présentées en introduction, il s'agit d'apprécier la place que des moines idéologues, qui sont en même temps de grands seigneurs, entendent occuper dans la société chrétienne, dont ils s'estiment les guides. En apparence éloignée des questions de la pratique, la démarche adoptée vise à faire toute sa place au sein de l'histoire de la société aux formations ecclésiastiques constitutives de l'aristocratie des temps féodaux. Le traitement historiographique des représentations que les Clunisiens des Xe-XIIe siècles ont voulu livrer d'eux-mêmes est prolongé jusqu'au tournant des années 1900 pour montrer quel enjeu de mémoire l'histoire de Cluny a pu constituer dans la reconstruction de la France catholique contemporaine.
