Walter Gropius saw stage work, much as he did architecture, as the interaction of different disciplines in 'orchestrated unity'. From the structural affinity between the two arts, he extrapolated the need to set up a Bauhaus stage. Here, the constitutive elements of 'stage design' were to be investigated and redefined. The Bauhaus stage revolved around Oskar Schlemmer, who was head of the stage workshop from 1923 to 1929. With his Triadic Ballet and Bauhaus dances, he explored the field of tension of 'man in space' and hence the fundamentals of theatrical design in abstract and geometrical experiments with form, colour, sound, movement and light.

En décembre 2002, la Galerie Odéon n°5 invite l'artiste suisse Felice Varini pour une exposition personnelle. L'idée d'un travail sur la place de l'Odéon s'impose alors en complément aux pièces peintes pensées pour l'intérieur de la galerie. Après une année de travail et de démarches administratives, l'oeuvre est enfin installée en six jours et cinq nuits. La place de l'Odéon est investie, la nuit comme le jour, et le tracé, imaginé sur le papier, se confronte enfin à la réalité du lieu et des gens qui l'habitent. En suivant au plus près la naissance de l'oeuvre, le film montre la prise de possession progressive du lieu par Varini, les inévitables surprises et difficultés qui jalonnent cette aventure, et le processus de création tel qu'il est, sans embellissement ou commentaire directif.
