Since the 2008 crisis, the financial industry has been assailed by an endless number of regulations. Whether brand new or steps in a journey – that nobody knows when it will end – each regulation influences the financial world. They have even become one of the main challenges for the market. Mainly implemented to enhance the financial stability of the industry or to protect customers, they are too often perceived as significant costs for companies. Indeed, the price of reaching compliance is not to be underestimated as it includes both people and technology. However, by choosing the right approach to their implementation, the firms impacted could actually save time and money in the long run. But to do so, they need to take well thought-out and judicious actions that best suit their business. These include strategic, operational and tactical responses. The implementation journey is therefore long and difficult.

Banks are evolving in a complex and highly regulated environment which is facing regular challenges and disruption. In order to innovate and to adapt to such an environment, banks must implement new technologies within their organisation. One specific technology is currently impacting importantly the banking sector: Artificial Intelligence. This report aims to analyse the actual impact of AI in the banking institutions by analysing the opportunities but also the risked emerging from the implementation of artificial intelligence. The methedology used to build this thesis has been divided into the main following steps: Literature review, online survey and interviews with experts in the artificial intelligence field. Even if artificial intelligence is still at an early stage of development, AI is already offering interesting opportunities for banks by enabling an enhancement of their operational processes and of their business value. Opportunities such as productivity, cost savings, improved customers experience and services, better risk management,.. can be seized thanks to artificial intelligence. Naturally, opportunities go along with risks. The risk is one of the centrepieces of the banking environment and banks must ensure their risk mitigation function. Many risks are involved with the use of artificial intelligence and banks must be highly vigilant about it. Cybersecurity risk, model risk, data privacy risk and others must more than ever be monitored. Artificial intelligence is also impacting the internal organisation of banks. Indeed, some tasks performed by humans are replaced. A high flexibility will be required from the human workers in order to be assigned to other tasks. New skills and jobs profile are emerging while others become less important and could disappear in the future. The skills and job landscape has already changed and will even more evolve in the future. Artificial intelligence will allow banks to arm themselves against the increasing competition but also to innovate and to offer better quality services to their customers who are becoming increasingly demanding with banks. Also, banks will have to ensure that trust, which is the bank’s cornerstone, is maintained and balances between the risks and opportunities offered by Artificial intelligence.

Digital marketing is now well known to most companies. However, it is starting to become more and more personalized. Indeed, customers are now more influenced to buy when it is personalized. Algorithmic marketing is an undeniable advantage for a company. “Algorithm” is a scary word due to its complexity. However, every day we follow algorithms without even realizing it. The history of algorithms is very long, but recently it has become a predominant topic for many people. Indeed, thanks to technologies, algorithms are becoming more and more powerful but also intelligent. This study will be divided in five parts. First of all, the study will explain the context of the digital marketing in Belgium and introduce the notion of algorithm marketing. Secondly, the research will explain the term and the evolution of the traditional marketing but also the digital and algorithm marketing. Thirdly, a survey has been made to know if companies use algorithm marketing to know their opportunities. Thanks to this step, we will know if there is a real market or a potential market. Then interviews were conducted in order to know the key steps they had to implement. After that there will be a section where a discussion of results obtained has been made. Another aspect is also the difficulties that were met and alternatives explications. To conclude, a small summary of the results obtained has been made. Limitations of this research were mentioned as well as suggestions for future research.

In the early 2000, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) began to design specific IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for small and medium-sized entities (SMEs). Those SMEs are defined as entities that do not have public accountability and publish their financial statements on a regular basis. The IFRS for SMEs was designed on principles of its predecessors, the IFRS, but were simplified in order to be used by SMEs. A first version of the IFRS for SMEs was published in 2009. A second version of the IFRS for SMEs was published in November 2015, which takes into account several modifications made earlier. Today, the IFRS for SMEs is used in 80 countries. In its current version, the IFRS for SMEs will be effective in January 2017 and an early application is authorised. This master thesis revolves around the latest version of the IFRS for SMEs and will explain its main principles as well as a comparison with the Belgian generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Afterwards, this work will focus on the different opportunities that can benefit the SMEs. A survey will also support this work.
