Over buitenshuis werkende moeders bestaat een somber beeld: ze zouden gebukt gaan onder een overbelast bestaan, lijden aan allerlei klachten en worstelen met schuldgevoelens. Deze studie nuanceert het beeld en laat zien dat moeders met een baan zich weliswaar vaak moe en opgejaagd voelen, maar dat het combineren van werk en zorg ook veel en sterk positieve gevoelens oproept. Verschillende factoren maken het combineren meer of minder positief. De werksituatie, de emotionele en praktische steun van de partner en de strategieën die bij het combineren worden gebruikt, spelen een rol. Maar bepalend is vooral de eigen visie op het combineren. Moeders die het combineren ervaren als positief, zien werken als een mogelijkheid om te ontsnappen aan een saai bestaan als fulltime huisvrouw. Werken is voor hen een manier om zich verder te ontwikkelen. Moeders die het combineren ervaren als zorgelijk en zwaar, vinden werken niet zo bijzonder. Bovendien ervaren zij in hun werk vaak weinig begrip voor het feit dat zorgen ook tijd en aandacht vraagt. De ondervraagde moeders komen in het boek uitgebreid aan het woord.
