Abstract

Abstract

We study a new depth function, called Monge-Kantorovich Depth. This depth function has the ability to capture the non convex character of a distribution, which was not the case with traditional depth functions such Tukey’s depth, Liu’s depth or Mahalanobis depth. The definition of this depth is based on the notion of transport of a distribution of interest in p dimension to the uniform spherical distribution on the unit ball in p dimension. Another peculiarity of the Monge-Kantorovich depth function is that it corresponds to Tukey's depth both for a distribution of interest in dimension one and for a distribution of interest with elliptic symmetry. We also define the concepts related to this depth, namely the ranks, quantiles and depth contours of Monge-Kantorovich. We then propose an application of theory to practice, considering a database listing the top 200 universities in the world conducted by the Times Higher Education.

Abstract

In this study, a 2D thermal model of the manufacturing of a bulk sample by laser cladding process with a mixture of 316L stainless steel enriched with 20% vol of WC carbides is developed. The simulations consider the middle track of each layer of the clad. The substrate consists in pure 316L produced by conventional turning. The most important results carried out by thermal simulations are the peak temperature achieved at each layer as well as the apparent substrate temperature and the melt pool depth. Correlations between these computed featuresand the sample microstructure are performed for a better understanding of the genesis of the microstructure morphology, the cell and grain size, dissolution of partially melted carbides and heat accumulation that occur during the real deposition process. The numerical temperature field and its evolution along time simulation are computed by Finite Element software LAGAMINE, developed at ULiege. The bi-dimensional Finite Element model is validated considering the thermal history of the substrate recorded by a thermocouple and the experimental melt pool depth measured at each layer by an optic microscope. A sensitivity analysis is performed analyzing the effect of input laser power, the uncertainty of thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity) and the radiation heat versus convection one. The lack of fluid mechanic within the melt pool does not prevent the model to provide good results about the prediction of the heat accumulation. The manuscript ends with a discussion about some possible numerical model developments to improve the quality of the temperature predictions and the microstructure correlations.

Abstract

Nowadays, broadcasters must continually innovate to create compelling content that evokes emotions in viewers. Photo-realistic depth of field effect, augmented reality, or even 3D reconstruction could be one way to achieve this. Depth estimation is one of the steps to video understanding that allows these applications. In this master thesis, methods to estimate a depth map from a single image were explored. Especially, deep learning methods were preferred to those based on geometry or the use of sensors. Thus, the solution provided by this work is entirely software-based. In particular, a custom model has been created for a sports broadcast dataset. However, this dataset does not contain any ground truth depth map. Hence, self-supervised monocular depth estimation methods were investigated in this document. Specifically, trainings were performed with non-rectified and synchronized stereo images captured with uncalibrated cameras. In contrast to trainings based on monocular sequences, the scenes are static and the only movement is that of the camera. This is the ideal configuration for training with self-supervised methods. However, to our knowledge, we are the only ones to have attempted to train self-supervised monocular depth estimation methods using non-rectified stereo images captured with uncalibrated cameras. More precisely, in this work, the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the cameras are estimated during training along with the depth map. During the course of this research, we were able to demonstrate the ability of self-supervised methods to predict coherent depth maps when trained on non-rectified stereo sports broadcast videos captured with uncalibrated cameras. Moreover, we addressed the limitations regarding the generation of depth maps under those conditions.

Abstract

This thesis explains the findings of the research about how to create an integrated communication plan for Big Bad Wolf’s Virtual Reality services towards real estate and consulting companies in Belgium. The research method include a qualitative research conducted through in-depth interviews directed towards two different audiences: European digital agencies’ marketing professionals and real estate and consulting companies’ managers. The 6M model for communication planning is developed to analyze the research’s findings. The results show the existence of a potential unsatisfied need for Virtual Reality services within Belgian real estate and consulting companies. The target audience highlights Virtual Reality’s potential value for their businesses, but also express skepticism about it, mainly due to Virtual Reality’s technology and market immaturity. Furthermore, concerns regarding Virtual Reality current high costs overweighting its potential revenues have been expressed. It is thus necessary to educate both targets about Virtual Reality benefits for their businesses.Field research also points out European digital agencies’ communication best practices. Big Bad Wolf should invest in event marketing and position in the market as a provider of superior digital expertise through a high quality portfolio. Message should contain the quality of the product, the degree of fitting to target’s specific objectives for a project, the VR service’s high personalization for the client. Results also suggest to communicate through magazines and newspapers, sales and marketing events, e-newsletters, storytelling, blog, LinkedIn and outdoor campaigns. These actions are aimed to increase BBW’s brand awareness and improve its brand image among the target. After plan implementation, it is necessary to conduct further measurements and research to assess plan’s performances on the selected target audience.
