Abstract

Hybrids vehicles have a long history and a promising future and Belgium is part of it. They have a very large variety of architectures and technical options. Each one with very different results depending not only the physical disposition but also the energy management policy. The characteristics of different architectures and its specificities have been studied in this work, focusing in the series-parallel configuration known as AutoMixte.
Buses, as a particular kind of vehicle, have specific requirements. The utilization of hybrid powertrains in buses is a very interesting way to reduce the pollution and the congestion in the cities at the same time, with very low investments in infrastructure and reducing the fuel consumption and the fuel-dependency of the town.
Planetary gears are widely used in vehicles. In addition to the differential gear, they are one of the main components of automatic gearboxes, accumulating key advantages like longer life span and higher compactness for relatively higher ratios. The design established the optimum speed ratio as an adaptation of the speed range of the power machines to the bus speed range. The complete design respected particular compatibility rules and verified the loaded resistance using commercial software and classic formulas from international standards.
The integration of the planetary gears was modelled in a global system model with all the powertrain elements in order to obtain the total maximum mechanical output of the bus. The verification of the performance of the vehicle includes a gradeability and an acceleration simulation.
This work ends with the simulation of the consumption of this powertrain in the bus assuming one particular energy management policy and the standardised test for buses know as SORT. The efficiencies of the electrical machines were taken into account as well as the charging and discharging efficiencies of the battery. Specific consumption maps of the engine were used to calculate the fuel consumption of the bus.

Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to bring forward patterns and links between social innovations that are active in the fight against homelessness. Homelessness in general is a growing phenomenon, and classic responses do not seem to be sufficient. The innovativeness of the projects is therefore defined in this study as the dissimilarity of approach to these classic responses. By analysing twenty-four existing social innovation projects and the promise of the impact they are creating, this dissertation aims to create a better understanding of how social innovation takes place in this specific field and to write recommendations for the actors that are present in it such as researchers, entrepreneurs and governments.
The methodology used, relies on social performance analysis and more specifically on the change theory model. The participating projects were identified through online search engines, online platforms that regroup Belgian non-profits and the “Housing Solutions Platform” and selected by their innovativeness and diversity. Afterwards, they were examined through the optic of the change theory model. Then, comparisons within segments of that model and new models linking elements of different of those segments were constructed. Of course, at the beginning of the dissertation a literature review on homelessness, social innovation and social performance analysis was executed to create a background on these topics and allow for a better understanding of the analysed projects and used methods.
This explorative study resulted in interesting observations about social innovations in the field of homelessness, opened up questions about them that could be the basis of future quantitative research or qualitative interviews with such projects, and formulated recommendations and conclusions for researchers, for entrepreneurs, for aspiring entrepreneurs and for governments.

Abstract

The increase in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions due to shipping and its impact on
climate change is a concern for the maritime industry. Urgent steps are required to achieve
the International Maritime Organization (IMO) target of 50% GHG reduction by 2050.
The recent boom in digitalization of the shipping industry can be vital to improving
the energy efficiency of vessels. The high frequent operational data obtained from the
onboard sensors can be used to analyse the decrease in ship’s performance over time due
to aging and sufficient measures can be suggested timely to achieve the maximum possible
efficiency.
This master thesis investigates the performance of an intercontinental 14000 TEU
container vessel using high-frequency operational data. The operational data has been ob tained from University of Rostock server. Statistical outliers are removed using ISO19030
standards. Then this data is further filtered for different environmental and operational
conditions using simple filtering techniques and Machine Learning algorithms. Outputs
of both methods are compared with the design data to analyze the vessel’s performance
and the most suitable method is proposed. Moreover, the Energy Efficiency Operational
Indicator (EEOI) of the vessel is investigated over time. Results show that the perfor mance of the vessel is constant over the investigated time period. A good agreement has
also been found between the operational data with the design data.
Furthermore, this study also compares the performance of different machine learning
algorithms; Random Forrest, Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting, Multilayer Perceptron
and Least square methods over the filtered high-frequency data set. Blind testing results
show that the Random Forest algorithm has the best performance

Abstract

In an increasingly fast-moving automotive market, it is essential for car dealers to anticipate future consumer behaviour. In order to beat competitors, swift action is required. For this purpose, the management team of Discar Liège wishes to develop its control system by choosing the appropriate performance indicators, which will be decisive in order to make the right decisions.
In this paper, the different steps followed to obtain a dashboard tree and efficient KPIs are described. Firstly, the control process and indicators currently in use are analysed. Secondly, the stakeholders’ needs and the causes of existing issues in terms of data representativeness are detected. Then, research is carried out in order to develop a control system and dashboards adapted to dealership and automotive world specificities.
At the end of the study, recommendations to address existing problems are made. A process for producing and delivering dashboards, tailored to the current situation, is also suggested. Lastly, dashboard templates are proposed.
The suggested KPIs should allow an early detection of the sector developments but must be continuously reviewed in order to be perfectly aligned with the Discar Group’s strategy.

Abstract

This master thesis was led in KTH, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, in the Maritime Robotics Laboratory. The topic of the master thesis is the performance analysis of a reduced wind powered cargo model. This boat is a reduced version of the full-scale concept called OceanBird, part of the Wind Powered Car Carrier (wPCC) project. This project is a collaboration between the shipping company Wallenius Marine, the marine technology company SSPA and the Royal Institute of Technology KTH, which aims to cut 90 % of the fuel emissions of such cargo. The full-size project is a car-carrier that will be 200 m long and have five 80 m high rigid sails able to carry 7000 cars on board. KTH has the privilege of having a reduced model, exactly 1/30 of the full scale Oceanbird, to test and study the boat. This model is 7 meters long and features four wings of 4 meters high made out of fiberglass that propel the boat by creating lift. Such research is very new and thus does not provide a lot of comparison with previous studies. The performance of the boat is evaluated by its ability to manoeuvre in varying weather conditions. Different criteria are analysed in order to help assess the performance of the full-scale boat. Both experimental results from sea testing and numerical results from a simulator, which was designed for this project, are investigated and compared throughout the thesis period. The input of the external conditions that were acting on the boat are used for comparison in the simulations. The results reflect clear observations on the behaviour of such sailing model. Furthermore, the quality of the simulations can be assessed through the interpretation of the discrepancies present between results. This leads to improvements of the coefficients and assumptions used in the simulations. Regarding the conclusions of this master thesis, future testing and data recollection will improve the accuracy of observations.

Abstract

With Internet becoming the destination of choice for many consumers, online retailers cannot afford to become complacent about the impact that delivery management can have on their strategies. When it comes to competing in an increasingly overcrowded online environment, delivery can prove to be an important catalyst as it helps online retailers to provide an outstanding customer experience. This project-thesis focuses on the improvement of the delivery offering proposed by Clarins in order to enhance the customer experience. A better customer experience will normally lead to a better customer satisfaction which in turn will help to cultivate customer loyalty.
In the first place, a review of the scientific literature is performed in order to prove that last-mile delivery is an important aspect of the e-Commerce business. Afterwards, reports about online customer preferences are gathered. The purpose is to gain insights into what the customers with regard to delivery. Today’s highly experienced and difficult-to-satisfy customers desire more convenient and faster delivery options, more control over the delivery, real time notifications, delivery windows, etc.
A first analysis focuses on the carriers’ performance reports. Obviously, this analysis is conducted to assess the performance of the carriers. It turns out that all the carriers performed relatively well. An interesting finding concerns the responsibility of the customers for the delivery delays. Most of the time they occurred because the customers were absent from home when the delivery person showed up. A benchmark analysis is also carried out to determine where Clarins stands vis-à-vis its main competitors in terms of delivery services. The outcome is rather mixed, in particular with regard to the prices and the variety of the delivery options.
Based on the customer preferences as well as on the analyses, recommendations are made. They include a change of carrier for France and the addition of new delivery options in the other countries. Propositions are also provided for parameters fully controlled by Clarins such as the price of the delivery options, a system of order tracking integrated on the websites. A chapter dedicated to last-mile delivery innovations is also included.
