This dissertation aims to examine in depth whether or not day-of-the-week effects are present in the LIBOR setting process and to which extent these effects are observed through several well-defined time periods of the LIBOR manipulation scandal. Various econometric specifications are employed in this paper in order to examine these issues optimally on the aggregate and the individual panel bank level. Our findings indeed indicate the presence of day-of-the-week effects in the LIBOR setting process. However, by taking into account various time-specific financial factors, a distinction is made between true day-of-the-week effects and seemingly ones. In particular, this master's thesis will be able to establish a connection between the presence of day-of-the-week effects in the LIBOR setting process and exhibited manipulative behavior of well-identified panel banks in the form of an 'Enhanced Friday Effect'. Arguably, LIBOR submitters make use of the reduced attention of regulators and investors towards the weekend to mask their manipulative actions in a certain time period.

As the sharing economy emerges in numerous industries, Uber’s introduction in the taxi industry has entailed commotion, controversy and uncertainty. The previously stable and heavily regulated taxi industry’s disruption has been the subject of plenty of studies, investigating how the taxi industry is influenced by the emergence of Uber and possible other ridesharing services. This paper intends to substantiate as well as extend existing literature, as it strives to quantify how taxi companies and the taxi drivers’ labor market have been influenced by the extraordinary emerged competition. Deploying a Difference-in-Differences framework, this paper examines the evolution of the taxi industry in the 50 biggest MSAs in the United States. Although the results state that the number of active taxi companies, the number of traditional taxi drivers and their annual earnings decrease significantly, the existing literature declares that Uber’s emergence entails an increase in consumer surplus. Therefore, provided appropriate regulations, Uber’s emergence, or the emergence of ridesharing in general, will be a beneficial disruption of the taxi industry and enhance welfare.

Prediction markets are markets where participants trade contracts whose payoffs depend on unknown future events. In recent years, these markets have been used to forecast many different events such as the outcome of political elections, the sales of a company or the effect of a new government policy. Firstly, this paper looks at the theoretical literature on prediction markets with particular interest in the design considerations when setting up a market. Secondly, this paper investigates the performance of various prediction markets in the run-up to the 2008 U.S. presidential elections with particular attention paid to the performance of the market relative to polls.

The first part of this paper is a summary of relevant literature regarding the order effect in general. In the second part, a closer look is taken at the service voucher industry in Belgium. This is a government supported system, where Belgian consumers can use service vouchers to pay firms for work and help around their personal household. In a third part, there is an empirical analysis using data consisting of the sales figures of firms which accept service vouchers. The empirical analysis shows that there is hardly any sign of a bias towards firms with an alphabetically higher ranked name and the direction of this bias is also unclear. When testing for behavioral effects, there was no significant sign that firms changed their names to achieve a higher alphabetical rank.
