Abstract

Diagnostic Cytopathology Board Review and Self-Assessment provides a comprehensive systems-based review of non-gynecological cytology including cytomorphology, pitfalls and ancillary studies, presented in a high-yield format with board-type multiple choice questions and detailed answers. It provides an excellent review, resource, and self-assessment for pathologists, cytopathologists, and cytotechnologists, as well as trainees (pathology residents, cytopathology fellows, and cytotechology students) who are preparing for board examinations or in-service examinations, in addition to those who are looking to fine-tune their cytology diagnostic skills. The volume is organized in a systems-based format including chapters covering lung, lymph nodes, pancreas, liver, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, salivary gland, central nervous system, soft tissue and bone, kidney, adrenal, retroperitoneal, and exfoliative cytology of urine, serous fluids, and CSF. This book is enriched with high yield review, board exam-type questions, and high quality full-color images to maximize studying and review of cytopathology.

Abstract

This book systematically summarizes the ideas and technologies used in urine proteome analysis. It argues that change is the core of biomarker definition since the body uses its homeostatic mechanisms to correct changes in the blood. This means that urine is probably a better source of biomarkers than blood. A roadmap to the urinary biomarker era is proposed, and researchers are reminded of the potential opportunities and risks in their study design. Kidney diseases are emphasized as they produce the most significant changes in urine. This book tries to show researchers and graduate students, who are in or entering the field, "all things considered" rather than "the current affair". .

Abstract

This book compiles and explores cutting-edge research in degenerative skeletal disorders, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and congenital myopathy, and new stem-cell based therapies and gene replacement therapy. Twelve expertly-authored chapters navigate the nuances of these treatments in an array of contexts and biological systems. The topics covered include: How are urine cells from a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy transformed into beating heart cells? What can reprogrammed cells tell us about heart muscle failure? What do gene mutations mean for those born with a muscle disease? How are manufacturing methods applied to human stem cells? Does therapeutic exercise benefit those patients who receive engineered limb muscle? Is there practical advice about nutrition to enhance muscle function for the Duchenne patient? Can microRNAs be useful to regenerate diseased muscle? Regenerative Medicine for Degenerative Muscle Diseases is ideal for scientists and clinicians from varying disciplines in genetics, cell biology, virology, cell-based manufacturing, rehabilitation medicine, nutrition, veterinary medicine and neurosurgery. The reader will see how transformative changes occur in medicine that can powerfully impact the future for patients suffering from inherited disorders affecting muscles of the body, including the heart.

Abstract

This volume provides the essential theory as well as practice for the study of urine samples and body fluids other than urine. It is a concise compendium of information of a practical nature while additionally serving as a clinical resource leading to an understanding of clinical conditions for patients whose test specimens indicate the presence of a pathological condition. Selective laboratory procedures inform the investigator not only of how specimens are processed, but also the rationale for performing specific examinations. Parameters by which testing personnel may measure or evaluate the validity, accuracy and clinical implications of test results for clinical importance providing optimum and useful information are provided.

Abstract

Vestibular Migraine is a concise monograph that presents the scientific basis for the diagnosis and treatment of this common yet largely unrecognized cause of dizziness. Current knowledge of the features of the disorder is described, and clear guidance is provided on the differentiation of vestibular migraine from other conditions that induce dizziness, including Ménière’s disease. Symptomatic treatment and the various prophylactic options are discussed and evaluated, and advice is also included on long-term treatment and the circumstances under which treatment should be discontinued. Approximately one-third of migraineurs experience dizziness that sometimes occurs in conjunction with the headaches but often arises separately. The vestibular symptoms in this population vary in frequency, severity, and duration; they are described as spinning or lightheadedness or both and are often exacerbated by position change. Ear fullness, tinnitus, and hearing loss are frequent complaints. Vestibular migraine is diagnosed by carefully obtaining a history: there are no pathognomonic blood, urine, or imaging studies. This book will be of interest to all physicians and other health care providers who deal with dizzy patients, including internists, family physicians, neurologists, otolaryngologists, and trainees in those specialties, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Abstract

This sixth volume in the series Methods of Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prognosis discusses Ovarian Cancer, Renal Cancer, Urogenitary Cancer, Urinary Bladder Cancer, Cervical Uterine Cancer, Skin Cancer, Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma and Sarcoma. Both standard and emerging therapies for these cancers, written by expert oncologists/pathologists in this field, are included. This fully illustrated volume Identifies biomarkers based on genetic alterations for clear cell ovarian adenocarcinoma. Identifies subgroups of ovarian cancer by using differential gene expression. Includes the application of the power-Doppler imaging for distinguishing benign from malignant complex adrenal masses in ovarian cancer. Emphasizes the advantage of using cytoreduction surgery for diagnosing advanced ovarian cancer. Provides details on the treatment of kidney cancer with radiofrequency ablation, surgery, and chemotherapy. Explains the use of immunohistochemistry for diagnosing adenomatoid tumor of the adrenal gland. Discusses the chemotherapy of testicular cancer and related second primary tumors. Includes the diagnosis of urothelial bladder cancer with urine-based tumor markers. Explains the use of immunohistochemistry and MRI for diagnosing uterine cervical cancer and describes the staging of this cancer using PET alone or PET/CT. Describes the localization of malignant melanoma using FDG-PET/CT. Explains the use of prognostic receptors for nonmelanoma skin cancer. Details the treatment of multiple myeloma using immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted radionuclide therapy. Presents diagnostic immunohistochemistry of synovial and Kaposi's sarcoma. The technological advances presented in this volume are expected to expedite new discoveries and their translation to clinical practice. The field of oncology will benefit the most from these advanced methods, as a combination of therapies and personalized medicine will improve early detection of these different types of cancer. Professor Hayat has summarized the problems associated with the complexities of research publications and has been successful in editing a must-read volume for oncologists, cancer researchers, medical teachers and students of cancer biology.
