Abstract

Abstract

Interesting links between two areas of research At first glance, sport and sleep appear to be two topics that could hardly be more different: Physical and mental peak performance on the one hand - inactivity and unconsciousness on the other. This book is dedicated to this new issue and uses various examples from sports practice to show that there are numerous points of contact here. A theoretical section at the beginning introduces the basics of sports science and sleep research, while the much larger section is dedicated to its application in a sporting environment. Among other things, the sleep behaviour of athletes is presented, including how jet lag in sport and sleep deprivation can become noticeable before sporting performances and competitions. It also deals with the dream experience of motorised actions and training in lucid dreams. The book is aimed at those interested in sports science, sleep medicine, psychology and neurology, as well as trainers and sports enthusiasts who would like to read up on the subject in more detail. Contents: The basics of sleep and the circadian rhythm Sleep of athletes Sleep deprivation and athletic performance Dream research, dream experience of athletes, lucid dreams Author: Associate Prof. Dr Daniel Erlacher, sports scientist and psychologist at the University of Bern, habilitated on the subject of sport, sleep and dreams. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

This book aims to create a bedside resource for physiotherapists and exercise specialists dealing with a defined movement problem and plan and apply functional therapeutic exercises that can be diversified for the patient. For physiotherapists, exercise is undoubtedly the greatest weapon in treating diseases and improving health. Functional exercise approaches aim to improve physical performance and activities of daily life by adapting exercise prescriptions to the movements that the individual makes frequently in daily life or in sports. The daily activities vary from person to person due to our different habits and lifestyles. Therefore, functional exercise training should be designed differently for everyone. When designing a functional exercise prescription, physiotherapists should consider previous injuries or surgeries that may limit physical activity, as well as general health, muscular strength, endurance and strength, aerobic capacity, and activities that the patient should do in daily life. The functional exercise prescription should be customized considering both the fragility of the patient due to injury or surgery, and the strengths of the patient such as sports/exercise history and healthy eating habits. The book consists of four different parts: the concepts of exercise and physical activity, exercise types, and prescriptions are presented in the first part. The second part is dedicated to musculoskeletal anatomy specific to functional exercise, while the third part explores functional exercise-specific systems physiology and illustrates the compliance of each system with exercise, basic exercise physiology information, and the evaluation and treatment of individuals who are healthy and have diseases that affect each system. Finally, the book has the part of a special topic dealing with nutrition/nutritional supplements affecting recovery in the rehabilitation process after injury or surgery and supporting physical performance during exercise/sports. This book will be of interest to physiotherapists as well as health and sports professionals

Abstract

Abstract

Integrating MRI findings associated with the spectrum of problems seen in the most commonly treated joints in sports medicine with the diagnostic findings seen during arthroscopy of the same joint in the same patient, this unique text correlates this pathology and applies these findings to the clinic, the radiology reading room and the operating suite. Representing a microcosm of daily patient care, this atlas of interactive correlation is an exceedingly effective tool for education and continued learning, an impetus for interdisciplinary research collaboration, and a critical part of an approach to optimum patient care. Furthermore, this case-based correlation between MRI imaging and arthroscopic findings and treatment has been a well-received and effective method for teaching and discussion at meetings and instructional courses. The second edition of this popular case atlas is organized into five sections highlighting the major joints in which MRI and arthroscopy are most commonly used in sports medicine: knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, and a brand new section on the ankle. Chapters have been reformatted to a consistent presentation, beginning with an overview of the specific disease entity and followed by selected cases chosen by the chapter authors that best illustrate common or noteworthy disease entities or pathology, with an emphasis on the parallel MRI imaging and arthroscopic findings. Throughout the text, updated arthroscopy images reflect current surgical techniques, many of which have changed significantly since the original edition was published. Authors and section editors, many new to this edition, are nationally recognized experts, teachers and pioneers in their respective areas of sports medicine and have covered the gamut of topics in each of their sections. Taken together, this will be an invaluable resource for sports medicine specialists, orthopedic surgeons and musculoskeletal radiologists alike, promoting increasingly accurate diagnoses of pathology and advanced treatment options to aid in the optimization of patient care and recovery.
