"This book brings together a comprehensive and diverse range of perspectives and experiences of strategies and approaches that will be of value to anyone who works in delivery, leadership or support of diversity and inclusion in higher education. Its authentic voice, combined with a rich range of methodologies and personal insights helps the authors to bring complex concepts to life in a manner which is honest, thoughtful and challenging." -Professor Sarah Sharples, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, University of Nottingham, UK "Crimmins' excellent collection is a treasure trove of irrefutable statistical facts and figures that blows away the myth that diversity and inclusion policies have closed the equalities gap in higher education. Powerful fuel for policy makers and social justice educators passionate about creating a truly global academy where all can flourish regardless of race, gender, class, sexuality, and (dis)ability." -Professor Heidi Safia Mirza, Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK This book explores tried and tested strategies that support student and faculty engagement and inclusion in the academy. These strategies are anchored by a brief exploration of the history and effect/s of exclusion and deprivilege in higher education. However, while many publications exploring academic inequality focus on the causes and impacts of structural, psychological and cultural exclusion based on racism, sexism, classism and ableism, they rarely engage in interventions to expose and combat such de/privilege. Capturing examples of inclusive practices that are as diverse as student and faculty populations, these strategies can be easily translated and employed by organisations, collectives and individuals to recognise and combat social and academic exclusion within higher education environments. Gail Crimmins is Senior Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Her research interests include gender inequity and the student experience in the academy and uses of feminist approaches to research. .

This volume explores the implications of pluralism for international order. Distinguished contributors from around the world offer insights into the character of a pluralistic world order. They focus especially on the manifestations of international pluralism in great power relations, multilateralism, and regionalism. Contributors examine the myriad challenges a pluralistic world order will face in the years ahead, yet they eschew alarmist conclusions. There is still scope for the great powers to better manage their relations, and equally important, much space for multilateralism and regionalism to play their increasingly important roles in stabilizing world order. Distinctive in bringing the themes of pluralism and world order together in both theoretical exposition and policy discussion, this book offers a stimulating reading for scholars and practitioners of world politics. Feng Zhang is Professor of International Relations and Executive Dean of the Institute of Public Policy at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, and editor of the series in which this book appears. He studies Sino-American relations, Chinese foreign policy in East Asia, international relations in East Asian history, and international relations theory. He is the author of Chinese Hegemony: Grand Strategy and International Institutions in East Asian History (Stanford, 2015) and, with Professor Richard Ned Lebow, of Taming Sino-American Rivalry (Oxford, 2020) and Justice and International Order: East and West (Oxford, 2022).

This edited book explores the problems and challenges of negotiating the representation of ethnic minorities within history education. It investigates how states balance the (non-)acknowledgement of the reality of cultural or religious diversity, and the promotion of a point of convergence in history education to foster national identity. Shifting our attention away from the intractable challenges posed by post-conflict countries for reconciliation, the contributors draw attention to the need to explore ways to prevent or pre-empt conflicts and exclusion through history education, which could contribute to developing a more sustainable culture of peace. Drawing on a wide range of contexts and sources, this book asks how history education could contribute to forming critical, historically informed, and committed young citizens. The book will be of interest to students and academics working on themes such as nationalism, citizenship, ethnicity, history education, multicultural education, peace studies and area studies, as well as practitioners in the fields of history, social studies, civic or citizenship. Helen Ting Mu Hung is Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies, National University of Malaysia (UKM). Besides history education, her other research interests include national integration, multiculturalism, nationalism, gender and politics, identity and agency, and the politics of national identity. Luigi Cajani is a retired Professor of Early Modern History at the Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. He was formerly president (2012–2018) of the International Research Association for History and Social Sciences Education and is currently an associated scholar at the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Germany.

This book develops a framework for analyzing the creation and consolidation of democracy. Different social groups prefer different political institutions because of the way they allocate political power and resources. Thus democracy is preferred by the majority of citizens, but opposed by elites. Dictatorship nevertheless is not stable when citizens can threaten social disorder and revolution. In response, when the costs of repression are sufficiently high and promises of concessions are not credible, elites may be forced to create democracy. By democratizing, elites credibly transfer political power to the citizens, ensuring social stability. Democracy consolidates when elites do not have strong incentive to overthrow it. These processes depend on (1) the strength of civil society, (2) the structure of political institutions, (3) the nature of political and economic crises, (4) the level of economic inequality, (5) the structure of the economy, and (6) the form and extent of globalization.

This edited volume, which has been drafted in honour of Professor Telò’s research career, offers the reader an overview of the various scientific debates that he has been involved in throughout his distinguished career. The aim was to highlight, contextualise and build on his most innovative contributions to each of these debates. The volume revolves around four thematic areas, each of which brings together a number of contributions that offer timely reflections on a given question or challenge covered by Professor Telò’s research. The first section, ‘Reflections on the Future of Social Democracy in Europe’, brings together chapters on the efficiency and legitimacy crisis facing contemporary social democracies, be it at the European or national levels. The second section, ‘Reflections on the Prospects for European Governance’, offers the reader a cross-section of assessments on the state of the European polity, its politics and the policies that it produces, notably in the light of recent institutional reforms and crises. The third section, ‘Reflections on the Implications of Multilateralism and Multipolarism for Europe’, explores how both regional experiences in general and the EU’s external action in particular have reacted to a rapidly changing international environment. The fourth and final section, ‘Reflections on the Lessons drawn from Engaged Research in Europe’, takes a step back and considers the role of the researcher in the evolving and challenging environment sketched out in the preceding sections. It focuses both on how to approach such a complex area of research as the EU as well as how to reconcile academic distance with societal engagement when working on controversial topics.
