This book attempts to eliminate the existing “imbalance” between the theory of electric machines and the theory of electromagnetic fields. In order to develop viable methods for engineering calculations, the author applies field equations. The resulting, new methods consist of traditional calculation elements represented in a refined form (circuit-loops, parameters, equivalent circuits and voltage equations). These calculation methods should be effective both for researchers and engineering practitioners, especially, in relation to the modern electric machines, such as powerful turbine generators, large high-speed synchronous motors, etc. Provides conditions for the generalization of the field research results; Expands capabilities of engineering calculation methods; Improves upon the theory of engineering calculations, under the conditions of the Maxwell’s equations.

The book focuses on a very important area of Smart Grids - cyber security. It deals in particular with the tools and techniques for cyber security analysis of the Smart Grid control systems. This includes the standards and guidelines, detailed vulnerability assessment framework, attack detection strategies, and attack mitigation methods. The book is divided into three parts. The smart grid cyber-physical system is discussed in the first part. The second part introduces the attacks in the grid system and a vulnerability assessment framework followed by a tool that can be used to analyze the grid control systems using existing cyber security standards. In the third part, different forms of attack detection methods are discussed along with Python-based implementations for the same. The book also discusses attack mitigation methods with implementation. Detailed illustrations and tables are provided in each section. The book also includes case studies based on standard test systems thushelping students to implement the discussed methods. The case studies are based on MATLAB and Python implementations thus catering to a wide range of audiences. Outputs and screenshots of the tools and programs are included so students can compare their results and improve upon the discussed methods. The book will be useful to a wide variety of audiences such as students and researchers in Smart Grids, power system operators, and device manufacturers.

Nanofabrication: Principles, Capabilities, and Limits provides a practical guide to nanofabrication technologies and processes. It was first published in 2008 and is now in an updated third edition. The book introduces readers to the fundamentals and recent developments in nanofabrication techniques, with chapters covering optical lithography, electron beam lithography, and nanoimprinting lithography, as well as nanofabrication by focused ion beams, scanning tips, self-assembly, and nanoscale pattern transfer by etching and deposition. There is also a chapter describing various tricks that enable the fabrication of nanostructures that would otherwise be impossible using traditional methods. The unique feature of this book is that each technique introduced is not only about its capabilities but also its limits so that the readers are fully aware of the best options to choose from a toolbox of nanofabrication processes covered in the book. Contains most of the nanofabrication techniques encountered in both industrial applications and scientific research; Presents less theoretical and more practical information and examples from the author’s own work and the literature; Provides comprehensive illustrations to help understand lithography techniques using the author’s simulation programs.

The new edition of this textbook is based on Dr. Thanh T. Tran’s 10+ years’ experience teaching high-speed digital and analog design courses at Rice University and 30+ years’ experience working in high-speed system design, including signal and power integrity in digital signal processing (DSP), computer, and embedded system. The book provides hands-on, practical instruction on high-speed digital and analog design for students and working engineers. The author first presents good high-speed digital and analog design practices that minimize both component and system noise and ensure system design success. He then presents guidelines to be used throughout the design process to reduce noise and radiation and to avoid common pitfalls while improving quality and reliability. The book is filled with tips on design and system simulation that minimize late stage redesign costs and product shipment delays. Hands-on design examples focusing on audio, video, analog filters, DDR memory, and power supplies are featured throughout. In addition, the author provides a practical approach to design multi-gigahertz high-speed serial busses (USB-C, PCIe, HDMI, DP) and simulate printed circuit board insertion and return loss using s-parameter models. Presents a practical hands-on approach to high speed system design, including spice and IBIS and s-parameter simulations; Provides design for low noise and radiation by proper printed circuit board floor planning and stackup, effective power supply decoupling techniques, grounding, and analog/digital system partitioning; Presents designs and simulations of passive and active analog filters required for analog inputs and outputs of a system, including a review of AC-coupled and DC-coupled circuits; Demonstrates the use of multiple computer aided engineering tools (spice, IBIS, and s-parameter) to solve design problems and to do critical timing analysis. Dr. Thanh Tran, a professor in the practice at Rice University and a server platform architect at AMD, earned his BSEE from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston. He is an accomplished engineer with extensive hands-on experience in architecting and designing complex systems and currently holds 37 issued patents.

This textbook provides a starter’s guide to Verilog, to be used in conjunction with a one-semester course in Digital Systems Design, or on its own for readers who only need an introduction to the language. This book is designed to match the way the material is actually taught in the classroom. Topics are presented in a manner which builds foundational knowledge before moving onto advanced topics. The author has designed the presentation with learning goals and assessment at its core. Each section addresses a specific learning outcome that the student should be able to “do” after its completion. The concept checks and exercise problems provide a rich set of assessment tools to measure student performance on each outcome. Written the way the material is taught, enabling a bottom-up approach to learning which culminates with a high-level of learning, with a solid foundation; Emphasizes examples from which students can learn: contains a solved example for nearly every section in the book; Includes more than 200 exercise problems, as well as concept check questions for each section, tied directly to specific learning outcomes.

The metrological detection of gases is of great importance in many areas of technology. These include above all energy technology, food technology, process engineering, biotechnology, safety engineering, medical technology and environmental technology. The book describes the physical properties of gases and describes the different measuring methods and sensor principles for the analysis of gas mixtures. The use of gas sensors in the different applications is shown by means of practical examples. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Gasmesstechnik in Theorie und Praxis by Gerhard Wiegleb, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2017. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
