Abstract

The series Advances in Polymer Science presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in polymer and biopolymer science. It covers all areas of research in polymer and biopolymer science including chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, material science. The thematic volumes are addressed to scientists, whether at universities or in industry, who wish to keep abreast of the important advances in the covered topics. Advances in Polymer Science enjoys a longstanding tradition and good reputation in its community. Each volume is dedicated to a current topic, and each review critically surveys one aspect of that topic, to place it within the context of the volume. The volumes typically summarize the significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years and discuss them critically, presenting selected examples, explaining and illustrating the important principles, and bringing together many important references of primary literature. On that basis, future research directions in the area can be discussed. Advances in Polymer Science volumes thus are important references for every polymer scientist, as well as for other scientists interested in polymer science - as an introduction to a neighboring field, or as a compilation of detailed information for the specialist. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Single contributions can be specially commissioned. Readership: Polymer scientists, or scientists in related fields interested in polymer and biopolymer science, at universities or in industry, graduate students.

Abstract

This book combines new quantitative erosion measurement methods with a geochemical fingerprint and a model-based approach to measure erosion and sediment flux in the Wadi Al-Arab, a Mediterranean to semi-arid catchment in northwest Jordan. The outcomes reveal the local importance of soil erosion and sediment yield in connection with sedimentation and pollution of surface water bodies, propose managed aquifer recharge strategies that focus on in-channel constructions, and can be used to support local soil management strategies. In Jordan, one of the most water scarcity-affected countries in the world, erosion and sedimentation negatively impact integrative water resource management projects, such as water reservoirs and groundwater recharge basins. This book combines a multiple-response approach with new qualitative methods, such as olive mound measurements and OSL dating of Roman cistern sediments, to obtain long-term average erosion rates in the Mediterranean to semi-arid Wadi Al-Arab catchment in northwest Jordan. The implementation and enhancement of a geochemical sediment fingerprint of the reservoir sediments helped to provide new insights on sediment connectivity. Lastly, the outcomes were compiled and tested in the SedNet model, which provides a more holistic view of the results at the catchment scale and can effectively complement local management strategies.

Abstract

'While there has been much talk in both scientific and political arenas, we still know little about the dynamics and day-to-day functioning of Switzerland's "bilateral way". Jenni's excellent book fills a gap. The innovative application of the "differentiated integration" framework to a rich collection of data makes an important contribution to both the Swiss and European literature.' - Prof. Pascal Sciarini, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Geneva, Switzerland 'The book addresses very topical and hitherto under-investigated questions on the basis of an impressive database. It makes a major contribution to the existing literature both for conceptualizing the notion of differentiated integration at the level of regulatory Europeanization and for our knowledge of the scope and dynamism of European provisions in the Swiss legal order.' - Prof. Sandra Lavenex, University of Geneva, Switzerland 'Sabine Jenni provides a systematic long-term analysis of the impact of European integration on Swiss legislation. She finds that, although Switzerland is not an EU member, it is subject to the same or functionally equivalent institutional dynamics as the member states. This study makes an important contribution to our understanding of differentiated integration - and a highly topical one in light of the 'Brexit' debate.' - Prof. Frank Schimmelfennig, ETH Zurich, Switzerland This book analyses Switzerland's European policies using the concept of differentiated European integration, providing a new and original perspective on the country. This analytical approach focuses on the similarities between Switzerland's EU policies and the integration of EU member states. The latter have often been the focus of research as Switzerland is the last Western European country not to have become a member of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). The book claims that Switzerland's position on the European integration map is different in terms of degree from many EU member states, but not different in kind. The cornerstone of the book is new empirical data quantitatively measuring Switzerland's differentiated integration during the period 1990 - 2010. The data rely on the sectoral agreements Switzerland concluded with the EU and the voluntary incorporation of EU law into domestic legislation. The book shows, among other findings, that over time Swiss European policies have begun to resemble integration policies and that the more they did so, the more dynamically they evolved. Sabine Jenni is Associated Researcher at ETH Zurich and holds teaching assignments at the University of Lucerne, Switzerland. She also works as a Project Coordinator for artasfoundation.

Abstract

This book covers incidental radiological findings (IFs) from different perspectives, provides interesting ethical background information, highlights the differences between IFs in clinical routine and during research studies, explains the management of IFs with reference to practices in different countries. The prevalence of IFs is increasing due to the wider use of modern imaging modalities in routine clinical practice and large population-based cohort studies. The reporting of these findings may lead to further diagnostic investigations and treatment and must therefore be handled with knowledge and care. The management of IFs in clinical routine is regulated by the guidelines of the different academic societies, while management in the setting of research studies depends on a variety of factors. In general, IFs must be disclosed to the imaged subject if they are potentially clinically relevant, but subjects must also be protected from the consequences of false positive findings. This book, written by distinguished experts in their fields, discusses all these issues and will be of interest to radiologists, other clinicians, and radiographers/technicians.
