En 1948, on a peine à l'imaginer aujourd'hui, L'Oréal n'était qu'une PME. En 35 ans, son chiffre d'affaires est passé de 200 millions à 20 milliards de francs. Ce livre révèle que les facteurs tels que l'argent ou les techniques classiques de gestion ont joué un rôle mineur dans cette expansion. Pour François Dalle, celle-ci a été principalement due à l'adhésion de tous à ce qu'il appelle l'esprit L'Oréal : l'installation dans " le mental " de l'entreprise d'une volonté forcenée de conquête et de développement, associée à une véritable mystique de la qualité et au souci de saisir avant les autres " ce qui commence ". C'est ce qui a permis de diversifier les activités de L'Oréal, de les étendre à toute l'Europe, au Japon et aux deux Amériques, et de traverser sans faiblir les crises des années 70 et 80. François Dalle est entré en 1942 chez Monsavon, une petite savonnerie qui appartenait à Eugène Schueller, le fondateur de L'Oréal. Il a ensuite dirigé L'Oréal à partir de 1948, d'abord aux côtés d'Eugène Schueller, puis comme président de 1957 à 1985.
