The British Isles are home to a vast range of different spoken and signed languages and dialects. Language continues to evolve rapidly, in its diversity, in the number and the backgrounds of its speakers, and in the repercussions it has had for political and educational affairs. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the dominant languages and dialects used in the British Isles. Is British English becoming more like American English? If so, why, and in what ways? This book compares examples of American and British language data from the 1930s, 1960s, 1990s and 2000s, to track the most important ways that both varieties are changing over time, and compares the extent to which they are following similar paths using a mixture of computer and human analysis. The analysis is carried out across several levels, including spelling differences (such as colour vs color), vocabulary (truck vs lorry), and a range of morphological, grammatical, semantic and pragmatic features. Baker explores the changing aspects of American and British society which help to explain the findings.

?Elke dag horen, spreken en lezen we verschillende talen en taalvariëteiten. Die meertalige realiteit weerspiegelt zich in onze scholen. Hoe leren we onze leerlingen met die taaldiversiteit omgaan en hoe kunnen we deze positief aanwenden op de klasvloer? Talensensibilisering biedt kansen. Via een internationale praktijkgerichte literatuurstudie en een bevraging van internationale en Vlaamse experts werd onderzocht wat het concept talensensibilisering inhoudt en wat de effecten zijn op leerlingen en leerkrachten. Dit onderzoek leverde een wetenschappelijk rapport op en een wegwijzer voor de Vlaamse onderwijspraktijk. Dit boekje, de wegwijzer, is bedoeld voor leerkrachten, coördinatoren en directies die op hun school talensensibiliserend willen werken of meer inzicht willen krijgen in de sterke en minder sterke kanten van hun aanpak. Een vraag-antwoordmodel biedt een conceptueel kader voor een krachtige toepassing van talensensibilisering in de klas en voor de inpassing in een talenbeleid op school. Handzame tips, inspirerende praktijkvoorbeelden en referenties naar lesmaterialen geven inzicht in de kansen van talensensibilisering.
