Antidepressants (AD) are drugs widely used for the treatment of depression, and also for the treatment of other conditions such as anxiety disorders, eating disorders, addictions (tobacco), neuropathic pain of diabetic origin, childhood nocturnal enuresis, etc. One of the common side effects of long-term AD is impaired sexual function, i.e. disorders in desire, excitement, orgasm and ejaculation. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) induced by AD is high, which is not favor of treatment because the frequency of SD is already high in depressed populations without medication. This effect negatively impacts the quality of life of patients and may contribute to worsening depressive symptoms. The efficacy of the AD treatment is even more difficult to achieve because of this high rates of discontinuation and noncompliance due to AD induced SD. Strategies to manage or limit the emergence of SD induced by AD treatment are needed to improve patient adherence. Using data from the literature, we have attempted to explain the mechanisms involved and we have examined the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management strategies reported. In addition, we noted that AD by their depressing effects on sexual function, are useful in the treatment of certain sexual disorders, especially in the pharmacological management of premature ejaculation. This research has allowed us to develop an example of what to do, and to know what advice to provide when facing a complaint of this nature.
